Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro with Window 7 Ultiimate 32 bit operatinig system

I have both Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro (default program for pdf file types) and Adobe Reader installed on all my computers and no not wish to change this.  When I try to attach a file using Ring Central Softphone, it does not accept the file without a work around.  I can go to Control Panel, Default Programs, make Adobe Reader the default for pdf files, attach the file and after it is attached, switch back to Adobe Acrobat as the default program for pdf files.  I do not think it should take this much work to send the file and I detest work arounds.  Is there a way to avoid this?

Since some users have both Acrobat and Reader, I believe that both (new and older versions) should be accommodated.

Hi Eric, this does sound strange. I think both versions should work.  When you save the pdf files, do the two programs by any chance save them in a different format; capital vs. lower case,  any special characters etc ?

I may have to do some more research. So to confirm, you are trying to fax these documents correct? and when you change the default viewer to the standard/free version of Adobe Reader it works? But if your default is the full/paid version of Adobe Acrobat it does not work?   Do you have problems attaching other file types such as Word docs?

You are correct.  I mentioned the version of Adobe Acrobat as well.  I have not encountered any issues with MS Office files and I do have the Ring Central Internet Fax driver installed as a Printer Device.

When you have Pro as the default, is there a specific error message are getting when you try to attache the pdf file? or what exactly happens?

I am starting from SoftPhone.  I click on Create and Send a Fax.  After addressing the fax and entering a cover letter, I try to attach a pdf file.

I then receive an error message box.  The title says RingCentral FaxEditor and the text says, "There is no application in the system associated with file "C:\Users|Eric\Desktop\KT 2015-02-25.pdf" or default association does not support printing.  Do you want to use Notepad instead?"

At that point, I need to switch my file defaults to Reader, attach again and after it is attached, I switch my default back to Acrobat.

That error message sounds like it's trying to actually open the file instead of just attach it.   Which version of the Softphone do you have installed?  I don't believe there's  link that says "create and send a fax" in the latest version. The newest version has an icon you click on to initiate the fax and then a paperclip icon to attache the file.

If you are not on the newest version, uninstall and re-install the RC Desktop app.  The latest version is 7.0.5.

Eric,  I was finally able to reproduce the error.  Are you clicking on the Adobe Reader Icon instead of the actual pdf file you wish to attach?  When I did that, I got the error message. Make sure you are clicking on the actual pdf file.

Mike,

I believe that I tried the newer version and it was much more oriented towards the IP phone and less focused on Faxes, so I stayed with the older version.  The older version actually opens files even with MS Office.

I was using build 6.04.001.50 (32 bit)

I will try to the newest first.  If it is fax friendly and compatible with Acrobat, I will use it.  If not, I will uninstall it and then download the legacy version.

Thanks

Eric

I looked over the product comparison and it verified that softphone has more fax features and since at this time, I only use Ring Central for faxing, I elected not to load RingCentral for Desktop.  I uninstalled my current version (which may have been the same one as the Legacy Softphone product) and then installed from the link you sent to me.  I once again got the error message, titled, "RingCentral FaxEditor" and containing the text message, "There is no application in the system associated with file "C:\Users|Eric\Desktop\KT 2015-02-25.pdf" or default association does not support printing.  Do you want to use Notepad instead?".  Once I do attach a doc file, the program that handles that type of file opens and then prints the document to the RingCentral FaxEditor and then MS Word closes.

Since the events describes above, I have tried the "RingCentral for Desktop" product.  It will attach a pdf file without any hiccups.  I cannot seem to be able to view faxes after I send them, I guess I will have to compromise get that from the Website.

I still believe that features should be added but not removed and functionality of software should be incrementally improved as new versions are introduced.

I have not been able to send text messages to a cell phone (AT&T).  Is that because my product is FAX500?

Hi Eric,  You are correct in that you'll have to view the send taxes from the website instead.  Also, regarding the SMS messaging you are also correct. Since it's a Fax account that option won't work.

I realize it's frustrating when you get use to using a feature and then it's taken  away.  We are constantly working on improving the new Desktop Softphone.  If it helps, the following page has a good side-by-side comparison of features.   http://success.ringcentral.com/articles/RC_Knowledge_Article/7310
The chart is a little out dated as some of the features have now been added, but, if you there's a feature that you'd like to see added or brought back, feel free to post an "idea" topic to this community so that our Product Team gets a better idea of demand.  Thanks
