Hard to truly answer since calls can also travel over WiFi, both with RC and your Cell provider.  Also depends on number of users, simultaneous calls, QOS settings, etc.  Here's a link that may help you.

Hi Leon,

By default, the mobile application uses G711 codec which transmits at a rate of 87.2 Kbps for both upload and download. By translating this to MB, each minute on either G711 or our HD codec (G722) totals 1.308 MB (both upload and download > 654 KB in either direction per minute).  When multiplied by 60 minutes per hour across 20,000 hours, you are looking at a total of 1569.6 GB.

That said, if you were to use G729 codec (less bandwidth, less clear audio quality), it would only transmit at 31.2 Kbps.  Using the same math, you would arrive at nearly 562 GB on this codec.

Oops! 20,000 minutes not 20,000 hours.

That's a bit less :)

Looking at 26.16 GB on standard G711 or G722 high-def codecs and 9.36 GB on G729 codec.

None of the above - It is a setting within the mobile application itself.  By default, you would be set to G711, but if you have a Premium or Enterprise tier account, you would have the option to enable HD audio (under My Mobile App Settings > VoIP Calling).

Is codec determined by router I purchase for RC? Comcast connection? Combination?

That is correct.

There is also a dialing mode within the application that uses cellular minutes instead of cellular data.  You would just need to turn VoIP calling off and dial out (assuming you have a cell signal).

Can I use the following equation 20,000 minutes x .001308 to get to 26.16 GB?

You can.  It may be easier to calculate by minute so you don't have to add/remove zeroes too much.  VoIP calling mode consumes a total of 1.308 MB per minute - ex. 15 minute call is 15 x 1.308 = 19.62 MB

Oh, and here are two approximates:

Skype-to-Skype calls: 50kbps or around 375KB for one minute of calling
  • Calls to mobile numbers or landlines: 6-20 kbps or around 150KB for one minute of calling
