Desktop 9.1.6 install for each user

Am I missing something here?? Do I have to install RC Desktop 9.1.6 for each user on my domain, one at a time on each computer???? I installed as a local admin then when I logged into my domain admin profile I saw that RC Desktop wasn't even listed in Apps & Features. So I installed on my domain admin profile and After that I checked the profile of a standard domain user, and sure enough, RC Desktop wasn't there.

So, am I missing something??? Wasn't like this before....

Now it's a PITA.

thats almost a little to IT-ish for me, but, i think it has to be installed per extension, so unless someone more techy than me responds with something different i wouldnt know another way.

If you are a Windows SCCM Administrator or if you have installation permissions on Windows SCCM - you should be able to push the RingCentralForWindows msi pkg install install to an entire device collection or a subset you create of only devices that need the installation, via SCCM

Unfortunately, that customer does not have SCCM. I've experienced the same issue on a non-Domain computer with 5 local users.

I currently have 9.1.6.27106 installed on my computer and anyone can log in and use the program.  It's installed for all users on the PC.  You do need admin rights on the pc to install though I believe.  You could try using psexec to install silently on each computer.

I forgot to mention that I'm running Windows 10. Which version are you running?

Also, how would you run the MSI package as an Administrator without modifying the registry? (Which I just tried and the installer fails to run properly)

I'm running Windows 8.1.  If you use psexec you can launch the msi on the remote computer using your admin credentials.  Let's say remote pc is called Test1.  You would download pstools and place it somewhere in your C: drive.  Then open a command prompt as an admin.  Navigate to the pstools directory.  Let's say your directory is c:\pstools.  So in administrator command prompt type the following:

1. cd c:\pstools

2. psexec \\Test1 -h -u domain\admin -p password cmd /c Msiexec /qn /I "\\networksharedirectory\Ringcentral.msi"

It should install the msi on the remote computer silently.  You could even create a txt file and list each pc name on each line.   Then instead of listing the pc name in step 2 (Test1) you would just refer to the path of the txt file.  psexec \\c:\pcnames.txt -h -u domain\admin -p password cmd /c Msiexec /qn /I "\\networksharedirectory\Ringcentral.msi"

We have multiple users that use multiple machines. None of them have the credentials needed to complete the installation of Ring Central. So to provide the client installation for every user on every machine an admin has to log into each user's account on each machine and do the install for them. Before we could install it and any user could use the application subject to providing the credentials. I cannot see that this change is an improvement in any way. Why would it not be easier to switch to another provider that understood the issues with managing more than one PC with more than one user?

Please fix this.

Maria,  I'm not quite following you here. Can you provide some more details.  RingCentral does not restrict the  individual users from installing the application but, some network admins do.  

Can you clarify the following? 

We have multiple users that use multiple machines. None of them have the credentials needed to complete the installation of Ring Central.
 Do these individual users use different machines? Normally this would require the machines to be deauthorized and reauthorised when they switch?   Any user should be able to install the package unless the network admin restricts it.  

We can provide an MSI file or EXE, whichever you prefer.

Here's the deal. When you navigate to the online portal to download the desktop app, the file that's downloaded is an MSI. There is no choice in the matter. Previously, these files were EXE, which allowed them to run with elevated credentials (Run As Administrator).

The issue here is that you can't right click and Run As Administrator when it comes to MSI files (the instructions in the post above by Chris Verdin do not work), and unfortunately the RingCentral installation package will always fail unless you run it with admin credentials.

This poses a big problem for companies that have an Active Directory/Group Policy environment  (90% of my customers) because everyday users of the RingCentral Desktop app are neither Local nor Domain admins. If they're not admins, then the installer will always fail.

The other major issue is that the Desktop App is profile based, so even if you login with Admin credentials onto the machine and install the app, it will only install for that Admin profile and not for any other profile on the machine, leaving you back at square one.

Bottom line, why introduce an msi package if the program requires elevation? Just leave it as an exe. It's things like this that drive admins crazy.

2018-02-14  Note, not all users have the same requirements.

We are an Enterprise customer and have thousands of users, we need the file in MSI format for mass deployment from our centralized Network Operations Center. Many other Enterprise customers deploy their RC product updates via MSI as well.   RingCentral may make the upgrade files in both formats to serve their installed user base of customers.

NOTE:  After the upgrade to 9.0 version, all customers will automatically get the non-admin install functionality. It's not controlled by admin web portal settings. However, Users that are upgrading from version 8.x or lower to version 9.0 or higher will need to grant desktop administrative permissions once in order for the 8.x or lower version to be uninstalled.

This is completely one-sided and needs to be changed.
It is a waste of time for each user to install the app themselves as opposed to allowing us to image a new PC, install the app, and then just allow a user to login to their own windows/AD account to find the app is there and ready to go. You need to provide us with the option for the All users install versus the single-user installer.

Hi,

If you install the MSI with the switch ALLUSERS=1, then it will install for all users of the machine it is being pushed to. That's the way we do it with ManageEngine.

The only caveat to this, is that you need to make sure you beat the users to upgrading the client when a new version is released!
