someone is using our number and calling our customers

I have had 2 calls this morning from previous customers of our moving company. The both said that someone from our number called them; one of them was at 5:30 am. How could someone be using our business phone number to call our customers? They would have had to access our call logs, right?

What phones are you using?  Was there a voice on the other end of the call or was it just blank?

USA-based acct | 2287 Users | 3800 DID lines | 28 sites | all Polycom VVX500 phone handsets 

2018-04-24  Contact your RingCentral Customer Success Manager and report this as someone is spoofing your business number.   The Telco Ops department at RingCentral knows how to deal with this - but you need to involve your CSM first.  Provide as many clear details as you can. Dates, times, etc.

Interesting... I called Customer Support, and they were unable to assist me. Short of changing our number, there was nothing that they can do.

Good to know if this reoccurs.

I have had this issue as well. I was told to contact the FCC and file a complaint. Other than that, my only option was to change my number.

Yes, I have seen this before also. I had this happen to me on one of my cell phones. The cell phone company could not do anything about it because they could not see the calls being made from my account. They where only using my number.  It is very hard to track down who is doing this and most of them are out side of the USA. Even after I filed with the FCC and reported the issues it took months before the calls stopped coming in to me that I was calling people. it will be hard to know when they stop using your number and even if you filing with the FCC had anything to do with them not using your number anymore. Most of the People that spoof your number will use it for a short time then move on and use another number. I hope this was some help. I hope you get this fixed soon.

The truth is that I can spoof any phone number (at least any in north america) within two minutes. It doesn't take much to do. Calls coming 'from your business' can be malicious and that is genuinely difficult to deal with. Unfortunately spoofing is incredibly easy to do, and made worse if people have your company in their contacts (their phone will see the spoofed number and automatically display your company in the Caller ID which makes it seem genuine).

This is why you see banks, utilities, etc. always advising customers that they will never call to request account details, etc. It might be best to do an email blast to all customers advising them of the issue, and reminding them that your company does not make unsolicited calls (unless that's your business of course).

So True, This is why it is never a good Idea to Trust Caller ID. and Never Give any information out to some one who calls you. I had this happen with my grandmother getting scammed this way. Some one called her and told her they where from her cable TV provider and the Caller ID showed there phone number so she thought it was ok to give out her information. Well they ended up taking money from her bank account. A good Practice is to always hang up and call back the service number for any company and Account you have and ask them if they called for the reason they gave you on the phone. Also most company's and all government agency's will send out a letter in the mail with issues they have.

We had this happen a few months ago. Hackers got into your phone system through our voicemails. Make sure everyone has a unique pin to login to their voicemail and that you change them periodically. Most of the calls happened in the early morning. We had no idea it was happening until someone called us saying we called them. A red flag should have been a bunch of missed calls coming into our conference room line but since its not used frequently we didn't know.

Guess you'd have to make sure that former employees don't still have access to any type of log in info that would allow them to use the mobile app or anything like that to make calls using your number.

While that has always been true it still does not address the spoofing issue that is becoming more rampant these days.
