Deskphone: add External Speed Dials

We recently ordered an SPA514 with 2 sidecars. The idea was to set up the sidecar buttons with 10 digit speed dials. Unfortunately RC firmware removes this native ability from the Cisco phone. The only way we could accomplish this was to build virtual extensions then unconditionally forward them to the 10 digit numbers. Not ideal at all. Programming 64 of these took 3 hours.

I'd like Ring Central to offer this option in the portal. Can you please submit a feature request.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Enhancement: Creating 'direct dial' buttons on the desk phone's expansion module.

My company is a consultancy and as such we deal with a number of clients and a number of contacts within each client.

We use the Cisco SPA514G desk phones and each handset has one sidecar expansion module (giving us 32 line buttons to assign).


We need to be able to setup the line buttons on the sidecar to provide a 'direct dial' buttons to different contacts and be able to change this as needed.

Current process

The only way to create each 'direct dial' (and RC support have confirmed this) is to:

  • create a new extension in our account without a phone number attached to it (this step is itself a 6 step process). We call this a 'virtual extension'.
  • within the new extension setup the 'Handling & Forwarding' rules to 'forward' to the contact's phone one number
  • then setup the presence settings of the target handset so that the new 'virtual extension' is mapped to a 'line button'.
  • reboot the handset


That is a great deal of work just to map one new number !

Additionally this means your RC admin portal 'users' list becomes boated with extensions that do not reflect your own company's phone system.

Basically each extension is a 'user account' with a login, password, personal details and all the call handling configuration. It is a waste of configuration and storage to do this just to enter one number.

Enhancement suggestion

It would be quicker, less confusing and less wasteful if you could create a 'contact extension' that just created a slot where you could enter a name and a phone number.

This 'contact extension' would then be available to select in each phone's 'Presence' configuration just like a regular extension is.

Please vote for this enhancement as I think it would make the system so much easier to administer and work with.
