We previously use a traditional PBX system, to dial out it would automatically pick a free line, if there’s no free line there would be a busy signal.
I like to see the same thing for ring central to use idle digital line for direct dial outbound calls. For example, have buttons in the softphone program to acquire/lock digital line and to free/unlock digital line; or do this automatically when trying to make a call and when the call is disconnected.

RC's lines are near un-blocking.  Therefore, you'll never get a busy signal.

Unless I'm not understanding your comment.

I'm confused on why you would want this?  Each digital line has it's own direct service and doesn't need to use another line.

Andrew,

I think what he wants to do is something like this. If a business purchases 3 DDLs from RIngCentral but has 5 people running a desktop app, he would like it to be able to pick an unused direct dial digital line to make the call out on. The if more than 3 people are using the 3 DDLs, then the 4th person would get a busy signal.

Unfortunately, as you are aware, that is not how RingCentral allows it's softphone/RingCentral for Windows application to work.

Oh got it.  So the idea is to save money then, not purchasing digital lines?  That seems like it would be the only benefit from this, but unfortunately as Jan, you said, RC doesn't work like that.

That's the way I read it, since he was referring to their previous traditional PBX system. I don't necessarily think that he's requesting it to save money, but there are many request in these forums for the ease of using the softphone on several devices without having to deauthorize them from one device to use them on another. The end result from such an implementation would be as I stated above. I can't see where it would be equitable for RingCentral to implement an idea like this, since as you stated, each user with a DDL already has their own outgoing line.

Jan, thank you for explaining and clarifying my posted idea. That's how our old PBX worked...  But if it's not equitable then I guess RC won't implement it. However for me, I didn't look at it like that, because I can already do "uneasy" switching or sharing of digital line for direct dial outbound calls 'manually' with the current system.
