Glip Question: Add/Save Contact within Glip?

When receiving a SMS text in Glip from an external contact, is there then a way to then create or name a contact in Glip so it shows the person's name instead of the full phone number?  I tried creating a contact in RingCentral, which made it correctly show the name of the contact in my softphone/RingCentral for desktop; however, in Glip it continued to show as the phone number.   In the screen shot attached you can see how it's correctly showing the contact name on my softphone but the 10 digit number in Glip.

I have found a work around that will only help me on people I have not already texted with.  

If I originate a text from the RingCentral APP on my google pixel xl2 to a contact within my ringcentral app then the contact shows on the PC glip app.

If you originate a text from the RC Phone app on your phone it will not work.

If you have already communicated with them without doing these steps first then it will not work.

Yes I originate text with people I have not already texted with.  It is a tool my clients prefer.

I am not in the business of cold texting either.

Your comment seems worthless.  It has added absolutely no value to the problem at hand.

If you had nothing of value to say, why say anything at all except to make yourself feel prideful by trying to tear my attempt at helping people down.

Sounds like text spamming. I think out of junk emails, robo calls and text spams, text spamming is the one people hate the most. Good luck with your unwanted solicitations.

Here you are again with another crass comment.  I run a moving business.  My customers call me and we speak and then communicate via text after until the move is complete. "Hi, The men just left the office and are headed in your direction.  ETA 30 minutes", "Hi, We received your signed estimate and have reserved your date" etc.

I too hate text spamming.  I just don't understand how you would assume something so negative about me simply by my posting a solution on how to get contacts to show in the glip app.

Anything else to say jerk?

Did you not see the portion of his original text where he said that these were contacts within his RingCentral app? If you are a customer of mine and I have your phone number, freely given by you to me, and I have you in my contacts, it is hardly spamming if I was to send you a text. Please be sure you read and understand before you falsely change the narrative.

Thank you for giving RingCentral an excuse to further prolong completing features. Also, thank you for giving RingCentral customer service a worthless "workaround" to throw at those who continue to raise the issue of problems not being completed.

If you had kept up with the community and had been reading posts over the last year, you would know that many of us have been asking for a program fix, not a worthless "workaround". Also, if you had kept up with the community and had been reading posts over the last year, you would know that many of us have been given excuse after excuse and a bunch of non-answers as to why contact problems are not fixed. If you had kept up with the community and had been reading posts over the last year, you would know that we were told this was being fixed in Q2 when obviously it will not be.

So yes, nothing but big thanks to you my friend. Good job!

Why are you blaming him for RingCentral's problems? He provided a workaround to people with similar issues. We have been waiting for this feature as well as everybody else. Until RingCentral fixes it, there is no harm in providing ways around it. That's the whole point of this community forum!

If you are really unhappy with RingCentral (and it sounds like you are), then maybe it's time you look at another solution for your business.

Maybe you should find a community that enjoys expressing their woes and not having concerns fixed by the company... there's lots of communities out there like that. But for the pragmatic rest of us, we don't tend to enjoy such things.

If you hadn't noticed, he has only been a member of the community forums for two weeks! He hasn't had the "opportunity" to do as you mentioned, "If you had kept up with the community and had been reading posts over the last year". Meanwhile you have been a member of the forums for only 7 months as of yesterday.

The Community Forums are NOT RingCentral support forums! They are a community resource acting as a force multiplier for users to help other users. Saadet, Mike and other RingCentral employees specifically assigned then and now to moderate and assist users in the forums are not support. They assist in getting answers to the community's questions and concerns. If you so astutely read these forums as you expect others to, you would have noticed there are legitimate feature requests that are 4 years old and even 6 years old. Brent in no way, shape or form has given "...RingCentral an excuse to further prolong completing features."

At least Brent offered a work-around...what have you contributed besides harsh rhetoric?

Are you saying assisting in answers to concerns is not support?

Yes, exactly. We agree there are feature requests that are years old! I'd like to see the ones centered around the basic functionality of contact management issued fixed, and not postponed. If you are in the business of providing solutions, you might know that any sort of temporary limited 'workaround' does not save the time it takes for an actual solution but can only be used to delay and/or increase that amount of time.

I appreciate the support folks.  I have not long been signed up for ring central and I think me and "account" have one thing in common.  We both think the features and support are lacking in a big way.  It took explaining over 5 different times to support what I was trying to accomplish before they led me to this thread and said that it is not an option at this moment.  The same day I found a work around and wanted to share it.  Hopefully it will help someone.

I just reformatted my PC and installed the latest version of the RingCentral desktop app on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. Why is there no way to add and save a new contact to the contact list? Am I missing something? On the last app, I was able to save a contact from the call list.

You aren't missing anything. I was astonished to learn a few months ago- the new RC App for desktop has zero contact functionality. Let that sync in a minute, the app your expected to communicate with has no address book, no a way to save contacts. It's pretty remarkable and apparently it's been like this for some time. 

I even naively contacted their help desk as I assumed I was doing something wrong. It would've never occured to me that a phone app would have no contacts. Here's my post a few months back.

A few others here, and here and another one here. It's been asked numerous times for the past year but here we are.

I recently updated the Ring Central desktop app for Mac to version 19.5.2.
This version seems to have no Contacts. It did not transfer my existing contacts, and I can't find a place to add new contacts. Below is a screenshot of the dashboard of the app on my desktop. 
This doesn't look like the pictures in the desktop user guide.

Hey all, I'm still waiting for a solid ETA on this. The Product Team is working hard on this item, and many others, in order to get feature parity. Right now they're thinking it might not be until next quarter since they have many items on the docket. I'll keep you posted when I hear more!

Goodness. I'm trying to push for Glip adoption at my company and then I have to explain to my team why they have to have 2 apps open to see who they are texting and direct messaging with. That's a hard sell.

We are researching Front as a possible solution and alternative to Glip. So far, so good. RC has had plenty of time to correct this problem.

I found another work around for you guys.
Step 1: Create a Team
Step 2: Add users (just type their name, it will autopopulate an email... it does not have to be a valid email....
Step 3: Organize your list as attached. (You should know how to get the number on your screen... at that point just put the number under the bogus email contact you made in step 2

And Voila.  - Feel free to mail me your millions that you will now earn.

Saving a number as a name contact is not rocket science.     If they haven't added such a basic feature by now,  it probably isn't going to happen.   The first request for this feature was 2 YEARS AGO!

I wanted to provide an update on the ability to save a contact within the RingCentral app.

This capability is available on the 19.3.23 version of the Mobile App (yay!) and the Product Team is working to get the same functionality added for the desktop app in either late Q1 or early Q2 of 2020. We'll share a firm date when we have one :)

Thanks for the update. Will the contact list in the RingCentral app sync with the RingCentral Phone app or will it be its own separate list like the mobile app? Ideally all apps would share a contact list (in our case synced to outlook as well).

We're actually working on retiring the RingCentral Phone mobile and desktop apps. Right now we're working on the mobile app - you can read more here. The desktop app work will happen next year.

It's nice that RC will be putting contact functionality into their product.  However, it is a sad testimonial that it was not in the top 3 items to put in the product in the first place.  Contacts seems like one of the first things to be done.....to have to wait another 6 months for this functionality seems sad....

This is a U.S. Account,  our business is a small startup Energy Healing clinic.
As of this writing, November 22, 2019, it is not possible to add a simple personal contact to your list using the unified desktop / web Ring Central application.  You can invite someone in to a conversation or a meeting, but not a contact.   If this is to be a true unified one stop shopping for all things Ring Central, then adding contacts would seem to be a basic feature to include.

I'm not sure I need to explain how this would be beneficial since this is a basic functionality which, in my view, ought to have been present in the first pass made by development.

Yes, I was told that the RC Phone could be used to add a contact, but then you learn that adding it in there does not synchronize the contacts to the Unified app.  So, what's the point.
The response from RC is that the RC Phone is not in their strategic path, but the GLIP unified app will be the one stop shopping for everything.  Right now, the ONLY way I can see to get contacts into the application is to Import them.  OK, let's say that I take the time to create a CSV file and import a bunch of contacts.  What about the next time I want to.   This is so basic.  I had a 30 minute conversation with someone who did not understand why this was so important.   What do you say to that? 

Why is it important to wash your hands, they just get dirty again......

I'm a new RC customer, and I have to say that on the exterior RC puts on a nice face for their support, but I sense a larger disconnect under the surface.  After ponying up the bucks for an annual contract I hope I have not made a terrible mistake with these guys.....

If you go on the Developer's forum, there's a lot of quality people on there, very capable. And RingCentral's APIs are actually top notch.

So why the lack of focus on basic functionality? I don't know. Customer service never answers that question. And the mods here only give non-answers.
This feature is a must to add to the system! We all receive so much spam and robocalls that most users just ignore a phone number unless they know who it is from.  If Glip is going to be the one all system that Ringcentral is trying to make it, then fix the Contacts before integrating any new products.

I'm surprised, unless I'm missing something, that the Caller ID for SMS conversations isn't sticky (retaining the same outbound caller ID as the current conversation).  The mobile app does this by default - is there a setting in the desktop app or is this not currently supported?

new users (USA), trying to enter our current client list into our contacts in our iphone and desktop apps (PC - GLIP app) and there's no way to enter a new contact or edit a phone number into a contact???  After many befuddled attempts, I contact RC and was told the only way to do this is by using the older phone on PC app?  Which makes no sense especially considering that I was previously directed by an RC rep in my second training session to use the new glip app and not the older phone app. 
Also, why do we have to each enter our contact list separately for our company?  Why is there not the ability to create a company client list?

You may want to consider that this post is over 2 years old and that many RC users have been asking for contact management for a long time. You won't find any answers to your questions here other than a consistent delay in ETA as to when these very very basic necessary functions will be implemented.

Agreed, crappiest customer service in the industry. Programmers are nonexistent and its a continual stall. We have moved on. My advice would be the same for others. Move along and quit spending your money with RC.

For the collaboration software we went with Slack. Not our first choice but at least it is up and going and the tech support is good [unlike RC lies]. IT is still deciding on who to replace Ring Central telephone system with; narrowed down between Cisco and Enterprise Google-voice I think.

You're now able to create a contact when you receive an SMS from a non-contact in the RingCentral mobile app. To do so:

1. Tap the right arrow on the top of the message next to the contact number



2. Choose create new contact or add to existing contact on the next screen

Megan, the best instructions, if you want to save contacts for use with your paid RingCentral account, are to discontinue using Glip and only use the older RingCentral Phone desktop program.

Both programs will run at the same time. You can download RingCentral Phone at support.ringcentral.com/s/download

It's the only way to have a working phonebook of Contacts you can click to call clients which also displays the Contact ID when one of your clients call. Much easier than trying to memorize a large amount of phone numbers in 2020.

@Arthur I'm sure there are many things on your plate but the last time I received an update the estimate was Q4 of 2019.  Can you give us any info as to why this keeps getting put on the back burner?  Or whatever is the cause of the delay?  I have no idea what feature is most complained about but I would say this one has a lot of complaints.  Help us understand what is going on.

I'll second Stephen's comments here.  Contacts are a FIRST PASS MUST HAVE for any modern phone system.  As a new customer I must say that my impression of NOT having contacts implemented in the first release of the application says to me that RingCentral is not focused on the fundamentals.  Bells and Whistles are nice, but only when the basics are already taken care of.  Arthur, please do your best as product manager to kick your programmer's into gear and get Contacts done....And make sure it's good.

I agree with you that this is one of the top 10 features that have areas for improvement. The teams understand that this is important to all our customers and we are trying our best to come up with an elegant solution.

The reason for our delay was because we spent the last year of 2019 developing and enhancing our Calendar and Meetings integration and that took longer than expected.

Contacts was slated for late Q4 in 2019, however due to the delay from the Calendar work this got pushed back as well.

Rest assured that this is currentlly in the pipeline and will go into the works really soon and I promise it will be a better experience for all our users! :)

Stephen,  I would recommend reading between the lines.  GLIP is an extra program they are wanting to sell to other consumers.  If you invite someone to use GLIP for instant messaging they can but only by downloading GLIP app and signing up.   If you can save them as a contact under a saved name, there is no incentive to invite other users to download the app.  

I had our whole office using Glip after much resistance.  Now we are transitioning back to MIcrosoft Office 365 using the TEAMS app for instant messaging & only using the older Ring Central Phone apps for texting our customers.    Glip is a great concept but can't be looked at anything other than an "idea" at this point.  Unfortunately for Ring Central,  I personally believe their window is about to close for their product to become a viable all in one office program.      

How else could you explain a program that has: 1) Phone Program- that you can't save as a name contact even when caller ID comes across.  2) Texting capability that you have to memorize the contacts by their Phone # ??  

My suggestion to all would be to move on from Glip if you want to use it as All In One Communication Tool.     It's not happening in Quarter 1,2,3, or 4 of this year I would bet.

Agreed, we had to tell all of our users to never use the ’Ringcentral’ app (confusing for users) because it cant do contacts and the messages from the RC Phone app are not inter-operative.
Until Glip is a fully integrated softphone first app that can also do messaging, it is just another below average messaging tool. Given that it is a separate app we will stick to the more functional collaboration apps Teams/Slack.
