RingCentral Office administrators can now enable full telephony and SMS messaging features for their entire company in the administration settings page of RingCentral Glip. Once enabled, Phone tab and SMS functionality will appear on both the Glip desktop and mobile apps for users.
Requirements:

  • Glip desktop app users must restart the app for the new telephony and SMS features to appear. To make outbound calls, a user's emergency 911 address must be added.
  • Glip mobile app users must be on version 4.13
  • The emergency 911 disclaimer must be accepted. Users can only make calls through the Phone tab when using the Glip service through the Google Chrome browser, desktop app, and mobile app.

Unfortunately, I tried this and it did not work well for me.  It was very slow and all of my contacts didn't show.  We use the merged contacts with Outlook.  They do show up in the regular RingCentral for Windows app, so I disabled the Glip phone feature and went back to the RingCentral for Windows app.

Sorry for the trouble, Shelly. We are still developing this feature and appreciate your feedback!

When will the Glip app support Plantronics headset for answering the phones. The last case I opened on this I was told it doesn't currently work.

Hi POBST, sorry, I don't have an ETA on this information.

I use a Platronics headset for calling in the Glip app and it works fine.  Give it a shot - if it doesnt work shoot me a note ted.jaffe@ringcentral.com

One feature to please consider adding is the HUD. Would be great to have everything wrapped into one app.

I strongly agree with all three of the previous suggestions (Outlook contacts integration, Plantronics call control, and the HUD). Right now, it’s basically a softphone with reduced capabilities baked into Glip. This is a good first step but not enough for us to start using it.

I applaud the effort to unify RC calling and Glip into one app and if you get the phone part right I suspect many email heavy organizations like ours will actually start using Glip. Until now we have ignored it because previous attempts to use team-based communication (MS Teams) failed as users do not want yet another app on their PCs.

We will definitely switch to the Glip app if/when the phone is on par with the soft phone app.

Is there a way to enable this as a one off in the glip developer tools?  It would be nice to be able to test this before we enable it company wide.

Hi Brian, I would suggest contacting your Account Manager to get more information about the beta program we are running and if we can turn it on for a single user as opposed to company wide :)

If we have many users using the text function with outside users, will it show their extension as well?  Will everyone see each others text?

Hey MRS,

When you ask, "will it show their extension as well?" could you provide more details? And what do you mean by, "Will everyone see each others text?" ?

If you send sms from glip it seems to use your DID.  You can't send sms to internal extensions.  If person a and person b send sms between each other it will show the DID not extension.

Hey Brian, if you send an SMS to your coworkers extension, Glip pulls up their name automatically. So, if I text John Smith extension 9002 within Glip, it just shows his name (text) and looks very similar to a regular Glip message :)

SMS would be huge for us if added to Glip. As Fredrik mentioned above, once the softphone can be fully integrated it would be great to just use one app.

Glip supports sms and works with (not listed as supported) receiving mms.  Sending SMS is kind of hidden in the new conversation dialog (look for Or Send Text)

Yes it does. However, in the desktop app it's half-baked since the app doesn't integrate with contacts, so all you see is the phone number, not the person's name. Unless you're Rain Man, it's impossible to keep it all straight once you carry on more than a few conversations.

The same is true for the phone inside the desktop Glip app.

Glip on iOS integrates with my contacts and works well.
