Hi Sandra,  From your description, it sounds like a case of Caller ID spoofing. Unfortunately this is getting to be quite a problem for almost every business. This page explains a little more about it and a few options.

Hi Mike:

I think the problem is not blocking incoming calls to my Ring Central system as it would be very difficult for me since many incoming calls to my call log and when I returned  the call the phone is switched off or just sounds busy line .
Here I'll show you some examples of calls that have been coming Sunday 26 April 2015.

VoiceFrom:(413) 327-7557      LEE MA Today 11:35 AM Phone Call    Accepted    0:05:05
VoiceFrom:(347) 903-2555BRONX      NY Today 7:49 AM Phone Call     Missed     0:00:33
VoiceFrom:(217) 601-6195GEORGETOWN      IL Today 7:04 AM Phone Call    Missed     0:00:25
***VoiceFrom:(845) 508-7857FLORIDA     NY Today 3:12 AM Phone Call    Accepted     0:05:04***
VoiceFrom:(646) 766-8441  NEW YORK  NY   Today 2:13 PM   Phone Call  Accepted    0:00:25

***if you you look at the call received at 3:13 a.m. shows that it was an accepted call and the duration of the call was 0:05:04 which is impossible because at that time no one is in my office.***

In the same way I have approximately in every page of my call log between 6 and 10 calls that no one answering in  other side and when We  returned  them  happens that I comment to you before.

I have an unlimited plan and have 8 lines eight hundred, but for me it is very disturbing that this amount of calls coming into my system because sellers bother to give leads that no one answers or simply are receiving calls that they do not care are generating any profit.

If you can help me or please check my account will thank you so much.

Hi Sandra, I checked the number and yes does exactly what you have been saying.  In my opinion I do not think that this is a technical Ring Central issue.  This happens to be a service, or malicious intent to cause problems.  Anyone could call any number on any phone system.  So if your number got picked up by one of these systems then the only thing you could do if Block the calls.

The blocking feature and screening features are quite powerfull and if you know of certain areacodes you are advertising your business in you could easily block out others.

The call screening is helpfull also where the caller has to nnounce their name before the call connects.

Other things I have done if put a fron end menu where you have to have people select an option to have the call come through to you.

Not sure the type of business you are in but some how your number got picked up by these annoying services.

You have some tools from the RC side to help block these calls but they need to be configured.

Wish there was just one click and that would go away but you are not the only one I have talked to about these issues.

Setting up the blocking is easy so try it.  You could block by areacode and that may help

Hi Sandra,   This really sounds like a case of caller ID spoofing which is pretty hard to stop. If you would like to Open a Case and include a call log indicating which calls are the suspected spoofing/nuisance calls, we'll do some research to see if we can help.  Unfortunately in extreme cases sometimes the only resolution is to change your number, but you'll want to open the case and let our support team at lest research it first.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled music spam calls to 800 number, spoofed caller ID, plays flamenco music endlessly....

This holiday season I have been receiving calls to my (800) number that just play endless flamenco music and no one answers if I speak or wait on the line.  Calling back the caller IDs I get random normal people who say they have no idea what I'm talking about so the caller ID is being spoofed.  I called Ringcentral support to see it was a technical problem and they told me it is not their fault and it is spam and the only help they gave me was to tell me to change my phone number.  I have two questions:

1) what is the purpose of these spam calls if no one comes on the line to sell me something

2) can ringcentral really not identify where calls are coming from even if the caller ID is spoofed?  I would think they could still see IP addresses or something ??

Obviously changing my business phone number is not a solution.

I would appreciate anyone's insight into this situation.

LGT,

To answer your questions...
1. The purpose is to create havoc and tick people off. They usually succeed.
2. Even if RingCentral could see an IP address, many people use DHCP and their IP address changes often. Even if it doesn't, nothing really can be done to stop them.

I had this issue at one point and what I did was to block each and every spoofed cal to my system. Most of the time they are doing the spoofed calls with a robo-caller and won't even realize that you have blocked them (they use robo-callers to the do the most "damage" in the shortest amount of time). Eventually they stopped.

Has anyone tried to press any keys when they get these calls?

We have receive 2 or more calls almost every day. I have started to record some of them and attempt to call them back.

The pattern:
-A number we have never seen calls us
-Answer and you normally hear background noise: a room full of people, someone driving in a car, a circus/fair/big noisy place.
-No one ever answers
-Press buttons and normally you will get either
-- 'You are muted' 'you are unmuted'
 -- '1: 'minus one', 2 'zero'
-sometimes it won't record (using the RingCentral app)
-call it back and one of two things:
-- the number is disconnected or no longer in service (example the 'DAVIDSON, MI' call from (810) 653-2122 at 17:21 today.
-- One VERY infrequent case we call the number back and the person claims to never have called us and says they are not a RingCentral customer. [This sounds more like the faking that other report vs the muted/unmuted or -1, 0, 1 when pressing keys... we almost always hear sound like it was a pocket dial (or open/dropped mic) and no-one ever answers. Once I even put it on speaker phone to listen and try to figure out where the person might be.

This is very annoying and it happens into the night so people on night call will answer it thinking it is a customer problem and really it must be a RingCentral bug.

Anyone else have this issue?

yes, this is exactly happening to me as well, very frustrating that Ringcentral can't get a grip on who is doing it, the caller IDs are spoofed so they are real people who have no idea their number is being used for caller ID.  I never tried pressing buttons though.

Me too.  This started happening after I switch to ring central from my previous VOIP.  The number of unwanted calls are increasing daily.  I need a reasonable explanation.

Hello wstark,

Did you port a previously owned number over to RingCentral or did you purchase a new one? Is this happening to all numbers on the account or just specific ones? Honestly, spoofers add new numbers to their list all the time and it's possible that they finally snagged yours and it coincidentally coincided when you joined.

wstark,

There is no reasonable explanation. As Saadet mentioned, spoofed calls are not usually coming from a VOIP provider. Why would they?

I have seen past posts here where someone just started fresh with RingCentral and a new number and got spoofed. I have an acquaintance who switched from RingCentral to another provider and got spoofed at the new provider on only one of her numbers (out of three transferred) and never had a spoofing issue with RingCentral.

Are you using Ring Central's publish to directory assistance? Could it be these spoofers and spammers are targeting members of this directory? Possibly they have identified a security gap and target numbers that have been published through ringcentral? I'm not sure just shooting in the dark.

I have ringcentral since 2008, I have presented this problem very often and sometimes sporadic. This week, starting Monday, March 5, I received approximately 20 calls, and when we return the calls, they are hospitals, disconnected numbers or simply no one answers or fax tone. This is really disappointing since we use it for sales and when we receive the call we think it is a call for sale and it really is just frustration.

all our advertising is in Spanish, in fact we answer from Spain, and all these people who call us no speak our language and every day is more difficult to control this flow of calls.

Is someone else having this?
And please, forgive me my bad English!

Hey Sandra, you can always open a support case with us. We will then route it to our Fraud Department who can investigate and report to the FCC if necessary

Hi, and thanks for your answer,  I have done it before on three occasions and not even the fraud department could give me a satisfactory answer. On many occasions I have called the customer service department and the agents do not know what we are talking about. If you can please guide me in this process I would gladly do it again.

Hi Sandra, in all honesty we cannot control people who are spoofing. No provider can. We can block the numbers but it is up to the FCC on the action that is taken. So if you want, you could always create a case with them directly.

Hello Sandra,

Not sure if this may be part of your dilemma, but it's an issue that individual employees encounter on occasion in our organization.

I assume that you use the RC desktop app? (Now called RC Phone) I could be wrong, but i recall that in order for the "Softphone" app to function, RC needs to assign a hidden phone number to each user. This number is grabbed from a pool when you first login to RC on the device. (Desktop, laptop, Tablet...) These hidden numbers unfortunately receive calls as they have a "history" of service. I've been told when you receive too many odd calls, you should de-activate the softphone on your device and re-activate it. This will grab a new number from the pool and hopefully the new number will not have the intrusive history as the original.

Someone may want to verify this.. as I'm going by memory.. and it's not the greatest.

-David

Hey David,

That's correct. The desktop application is assigned a random phone number, on the back end, in order to register.
