Lose mic when android app is in the background

I have a pixel 3 and I have recently noticed that when I am on a VOIP call connected via Bluetooth, if I "minimize" the ringcentral app to go look at an email or go into another app my mic is "disabled", the person on the other end can no longer hear me, but I can hear them. If I then reopen the app so it's displaying on my screen, the mic is re-enabled. Is there a setting to prevent this from happening?

This is the first time I'm hearing of this behavior. I would suggest contacting Support so we can do some more digging on the matter.
