I am trying to import contacts from a CSV Excel file with the company name, contact name, business address, business phone and business fax, but the only thing that gets uploaded is the first and last name. How can I import the entire contact information?

Hi Courtney,

It's probably because your CSV is not formatted correctly.

When importing contacts, the format and content of the .csv file (columns, rows and information) to be imported has to match that of your RingCentral account contacts.

Please reach out to Chuck for the template he uses or login to your account to make sure it's a perfect match. :)

Thanks.

Seriously - "email Chuck" is the best support we have on this?!?  Nothing in the official help either?

At the risk of offending anyone from RC or indepedent installers who apparently don't want to freely share this information in a self-service fashion on the community site, here's a link to a CSV template that imports cleanly.

Thanks Chuck and Brian for helping out on this thread.  Also, for anyone else who needs to import contacts one simple thing to remember is that if a system allows you to import a csv file, it will likely allow you to export a csv file as well. This is often the easiest way to get the correct format for most csv files.

In this case for RingCentral, you can log into your account and just click Contacts > Personal > Export .  When the file downloads you can open it look at the top row. It will have the correct format. You can just delete any entries that are on the form if you want to start with a blank csv file.

I just moved our services over to 8x8. We had too many service and support issues. This case was just a small example. Every minute I spend troubleshooting/investigating my phone system is a minute I'm not spending growing my business. Your official response here places the burden on the customer, forcing them into a path of trial-and-error and discussion board searching. All that instead of just posting a template.

I posted a template in 2 minutes. You spent more time than that justifying why you're not going to change.

Bye bye.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Contact Upload Template Request.

Can someone send me the contact upload template for RingCentral?

If you scroll up and look at the post from Brian, he has provided a download link for the CSV template.

I just spent the better part of the morning attempting to import our 2400 contacts from our database to RingCentral.  I can export these contacts in any manner I like, including the prescribed CSV format.  I called RingCentral for assistance but the support person was unfamiliar with the function.  In any case, this is a very poorly designed function.  I would be delighted to hear if anyone has had any success with it.  I wasted a couple of hours before throwing up my hands.  While we are generally pleased with RingCentral's service, this inability to mass import contacts easily is a major fail.

Hi Christopher,   If you download the csv template using the link that Brian posted above and use that as your template it should import your contacts.   If you are running into problems please explain here where you stuck, or what is happening.

I did use the csv template posted, which differs in format from the exported file generated when requesting an export.  I keyed in a couple of contacts and exported them and attempted to use that file by editing it in notepad with the comma delimited output from our database.  The output reflected the field names and order of names required in both files.  In all cases the message is "Please make sure you are using a valid CSV file and try again.".

Hi Christopher,   the safest thing to do is use the exported file as the template and edit it so you should be fine doing that.   The error message indicates that it's not a .csv file. .  It might be defaulting to a .txt file when you save it.

The lack of customer service from this company makes me baffled at how its gotten this far. With a wonky, ultra nit-picky backend (I'm decently computer savvy and have problems, I can only IMAGINE what less computer savvy people go through) you'd think their tech support would be top-notch. I've sat on hold for 15+ minutes with no hint of response, no queue time, no communication other than a crappy hold song at 3pm, 6pm, and 10am EST. I came on here to look for an answer and I found it, thank you BRIAN, a non-employee. How the hell is this type of lackluster company support even possible in this age of customer service-oriented business?

HI Everyone.  I am a new customer at RingCentral.  I have to say so far their customer support has been great.  I also had an issue getting my google contacts in to RC.  I went to their support website where I did an online chat.  I was on hold for about 3 min before someone came online.  They tried to help me out but I told them I did not have time to handle the reformat of my contact sheet.  I asked if I could just email my contacts to them and they handle it.  They said sure and the person gave me their email for me to send my sheet.  About 30 minutes later I got an email saying my service issue had been closed out.  I logged into my account and there were all 1800+ contacts.  Thanks again!

Hey Team, I am usually answering questions but now I have an issue.

The importing of contacts is no longer working.  I have been doing this for years with a CSV file and the excel template with no issues but recently I am getting an invalid CSV error.

Even in the simplest of examples where I have an empty personal contact list, I add one entry, Export that  Add another entry to the file, save it in the same format it exported and try to upload and I get an Invalid CSV file error.

Need some assistance here

Thanks team

There was an update that it will no longer accept any contact with special characters. Check this.  If you don't have any special characters, send us the file and we'll try it on our end.

Special Characters not accepted:  < > \ "

Some people have also had luck with opening a NEW excel document and pasting the contacts in there...and saving it as a new CSV file.

Well, in the export the system auto populates a date for birthday with 01/01/1889

Even removing that it still fails.

How about an E-Mail address so I could send you my file

Or just send me an E-mail so you don't have to post here

Do not worry, I bet in RC, they really knows you, very well.

It is weird that you can't upload the contact list by yourself...
