From an administrative perspective, it is important to have all of your devices, whether it is a desk phone, desktop application, or mobile application on the same version of software.

If you have an issue whose resolution is to upgrade the version of firmware on the Polycom phone, the process to upgrade firmware  is currently very cumbersome.  It is done using a browser and the application running on the Polycom phone.  To access the admin functions, you have to contact RingCentral Support to provide you with the password.  Even with a small deployment of Polycom phones, this is very time consuming.

Polycom provides an upgrade server that can upgrade phones across an Enterprise :  https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0ahUKEwjGr6zwq5bXAhUFx2MKHfe8BDgQFggoMAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fsupport.polycom.com%2Fcontent%2Fdam%2Fpolycom-support%2Fproducts%2FVoice%2Fpolycom_uc%2Fother-documents%2Fen%2FSoftware_Upgrade_Option_FP67993.pdf&usg=AOvVaw1MpZwAKmKqZHUvVc6AdGa-

It would be very beneficial if RingCentral incorporated this server as part of its offering to allow a company to upgrade the firmware for all their phones using this process instead of the web browser process.

Are you talking about Polycom phones purchased form RingCentral or that you provided yourself?

RingCentral carefully manages the firmware versions they have tested and support and push those out to your phones automatically.

Is there a reason you updated the firmware beyond what RingCentral pushes currently?

Yes.  I am talking about phones purchased from RingCentral.

The specific issue that caused us to upgrade firmware relates to the Polycom Expansion module.  The Presence / Speed Dial buttons stop working after a period of time.  When you pressed the button, it would not dial or perform a blind transfer.

The phone originally was using PoE and I thought it might be power related.  However, switching to AC dis not resolve the issue.

After performing a search of the Internet, I found multiple references on the Polycom Support site where this was a known issue in the 5.4.2 version of sip.ld that is provided by RingCentral.  Per Polycom's recommendation, we upgrade to a newer version of sip.ld.  Since upgrading that phone, the issue has not reoccurred.

Now I have one phone on a different version of firmware than the rest of the company.  I would prefer not to have that situation to manage, since there is a slight difference in operation of the Transfer function with that phone.

That is a bit unusual, but I see your point.  I guess you already worked with RingCentral and they are aware of this? I would expect the next time RC sends phones updates to fix this (assuming they are aware of the issue).
