Hey, RingCentral Community members!

We’re so excited to announce our new RingCentral app for desktop. Our product team has re-built our RingCentral app for desktop with a modern design, enhanced search capabilities, improved speed, and so much more.

You can access the unified app for team messages, video meetings, and phone calls now.

Give it a try from your browser.

Use your existing RingCentral credentials
(make sure to close out of the old app to avoid duplicate notifications).
Note: Desktop download will be available on May 8th and can be found here.

Take a look at some of the great new benefits you’ll get with the new RingCentral app for desktop:

There’s no rush! If now isn’t the right time, you can continue using your existing desktop app (soon to be renamed RingCentral Classic) for a while longer. The existing app will be supported until at least the end of this year and we won’t begin to transition you to the new desktop app until later this summer. Also, don’t worry, we’ll send you reminders and offer support when you transition your team to the new app. There’s more good stuff coming with the new RingCentral app -- like contacts integration with Office 365 and Google. Stay tuned!

If you have any questions or feedback, feel free to share them in the comments below. We will be sure to have our team ready to help address any questions you may have. And, as a friendly reminder, we ask that you operate with good intentions and use good judgment in this thread.

RC App Desktop FAQ

Q: What is the new RingCentral desktop app?

A: This is our new flagship desktop app which has been rebuilt with your user experience in mind. It’s fast, easy to use, and simple to navigate. It’s your single place for all communications –  team messages, video meetings, and phone calls.

Q:  Are there any costs that I need to be aware of?

A: No. The app is free and available for all RingCentral customers to download.

Q: Will there also be a new RingCentral mobile app?

A: The current RingCentral mobile app has already been designed to deliver a unified experience, so no updates are needed.

Q: What improvements have been made in the new desktop app?

A: With the new desktop app, users can expect the following:

  • Approximately 4x faster search functionality

  • 64% faster when switching between conversations

  • 34% speed increase in document upload and preview

  • 20% improvement in sign in time (from app launch to message)

Q: How do I move over to the new RingCentral desktop app?

A: The new RingCentral desktop app will be available for download on our Support site starting May 8th.

If you’d like to install the new RingCentral desktop app, please first uninstall the old desktop app or update it to version 20.2.20.
You can find a Migration Guide for Admins here.

Q: Will the new RingCentral Desktop app work for both RingCentral Meetings and RingCentral Video?

A: Yes. Regardless of what video service the customer has, the new desktop app will support both.

Q: What is the plan for sunsetting the old RingCentral desktop app (RingCentral Classic)?

A: The old desktop app (RingCentral Classic) will be supported until at least the end of 2020, however, no new developments will be made.

Q: Will the new RingCentral desktop app replace the RC Phone desktop app?

A: Eventually yes, when HUD is available in the new RC desktop app, which is planned for early 2021.

Q: What does this mean for plans to sunset our separate business apps including RC Phone desktop?

A: As announced back in May 2019, the plan to retire our separate mobile apps is already underway. With the introduction of our new desktop app, we will soon begin the process of retiring our separate desktop apps as well once we close all feature gaps. There are no clear timelines to retire RC Phone desktop and RC Meetings desktop at the moment but we’ll be sure to let you know before the process starts.

Q: Where do I learn more about this new app and get help?

A: Visit our microsite or reach out to your account manager directly to learn more.

I was just informed there isn't a team event calendar in the new desktop app...we have hundreds of teams and need the calendar to see events for the day, week and month.  Is this something in the works?  How long is the classic version available for?  Tech support is no
help with an answer.  They are saying to scroll through every team and look for an event.  That is not a solution...

Hi Chris,

A variant of the team calendar will be ready in Q3, 2020.

For Classic it will be available to switch to until the end of the year. (Tentatively)

Otherwise you are free to connect your O365 / Google calendar to the app and it should appear within the app.

a variant?   I do hope you mean it will be Calender and Tasks built in.  Not every business in the world uses Outlook or Google for these services.     The main reason we switched to using Glip was becuase it included Calendars and Tasks.

Same here.  Why not roll this new app out until AT LEAST all the features from the old app are included.  This just is a bad look for no reason...

Is the option to disable Glip messaging going to be made available at all? I've been told this morning by UK support that 6 months after it was announced as going live, it's not available to them, and has never been made available to them.

Might as well just pull the app off of Intune, and push out the "old and useless" separate apps, as there's no point in me forcing them to use the new one.

Will the new "App" be available as a standalone application? Keeping a browser tab always open for chat is not a great solution.

Overall, it's nice so far. But I can't find any way to change the color / theme like the old one had. Which I prefer it to be a darker purple. This all white is very hard on the eyes and the two columns being one color makes it hard to really distinguish and see new messages. Any chance you're going to bring back the themes or at least an option to alter the colors a bit?

Erica,
Thanks for sharing your feedback! We're still working on themes and don't have a set date. However, we are focused on making Dark Mode accessible - shooting for Q4.

Obviously, we want you to be using the new Desktop so you can continue to give us feedback, but we understand if you want to use your darker purple theme.

Keep us in the loop no matter what you decide.

Devs - if you are monitoring... What have you guys done to the new look RC Web App at app.ringcentral.com? While I generally like the new look and UI improvements and see how it will ultimately be better, it appears like you totally broke Tasks, which I utilize daily.

I have several teams set up which utilize tasks within them. When I click on a team in the current (old) view, all of my open tasks show neatly grouped on the right pane by section (by design) so I can have multiple task "checklists" and be able to find my stuff easily. Yes, the UI needs improvement, but at least they are grouped. With the new look, those sections are gone and all tasks are listed together. This is very disorganized now. Not only that, when you click on a task, the conversation thread is GONE. You only get what used to be the description. What is going on ??? This is useless for Tasks!!

Also, where did the ability to sort by Complete, Pending, All go? Where did the ability to view posts by newest at top or bottom go? Those options appear to be gone. If those features are still there, but hidden, then you have made it too hard and it needs to be more intuitive.

Again, there are definite UI improvements with the new look, but Tasks are all but useless to me now. PLEASE put these functions back or show me where they are now.

Attached a few screenshots concerning the Tasks and groupings issue.

*** Original Team Tasks grouped by section ***

*** New Look - not SECTIONED at all ***

*** Original view when click on task link - shows entire conversation thread (complete thread not seen in this screenshot, but continuation slider is evident)

*** New look view - Only original description shown in Task detail - no apparent way to see conversation thread in one place anymore ***

Indeed, without a way to group tasks we will have to find another solution. The new app breaks the ability to sort and group tasks. I have several projects that I manage there and the new app pretty much makes that impossible.

We'll continue to use the old app for now, but if that functionality is not returned in some way this becomes a showstopper for us.

I totally agree with others above about the tasks button. This is a must-have to manage tasks across teams and plan for future work. The new app will only display completed tasks or tasks currently due, and you have to go to each conversation separately to view them. The classic app shows current and future tasks for all teams and allows you to filter by teams or individuals. I had the new app downloaded, but have just switched back to the classic app. It was impossible to try to manage tasks in the new app.

The files button is also needed in the new app. The classic app provides the ability to view all files shared in all conversations and provides the ability to filter. The new app requires that you go to each separate conversation to view files shared in that conversation, which is totally inconvenient. The buttons on the classic app should be a minimum for the new app.

I'm grateful the classic app is still available. Hopefully it won't go away any time soon, at least not until the new app can have, at a minimum, all of the functionality of the classic app.

Agreed! I know that they say a lot of [missing?]functionality is coming Q3, so hopefully all this critical stuff comes back. I just can't figure out why they would release the new and improved without these functions that exist now, or at least give a warning as to things not being complete for the new look effort. Had they given the warning, I don't believe folks (including myself) would be so dumbfounded about what they are seeing. You just don't pull stuff that people may be using daily, have acclimated to and that may be critical to their operation, without putting out feelers or simply asking your users in the form of a survey or something what is important. Google and other software companies do this all the time and think they are doing everyone a favor. Yes, the interface and look and feel are nicer and modernized and that is welcome, but definitely a mis-step and hopefully a learning experience for the future.

Is anyone else following this thread counting down the days? We are 4 days away from the Famous Q3.

The task and calendar functionality is seriously lacking as mentioned in the above comments. We specifically chose Glip over other platforms because of the task and event management functionality.

We were underwhelmed and disappointed that a "new and improved" app was released that lacked the basic functions of the original version. We switched back to the classic version and have been searching for alternative platforms ever since. I am hoping RC delivers with the Q3 release because the Classic App is starting to slug.

Crossing my fingers.

PLEASE take CALL PARK more seriously.  We rely on this all day long.  Neither the soon-to-be-retired-yet-"new" Ringcentral Desktop app NOR the NEW ONE has any way to handle shared park locations.  The original Ringcentral Phone apps did.  There is a pattern here of launching "new" software with dramatic losses in functionality.  This is worrying and will encourage customers to start looking for alternatives.

What happend to the access to my contacts from Google/Outlook, now I have to go to those address books, look up the number and then go to ring central and dial, what a pain and a really unuseful upgrade.  Also, all my Favorites are no gone, what's up? Probably because you cut the Google/Outlook contact sync.  Now all my text messages only show a phone number, so I don't know who the texts belong to? What the hell are you guys think with this, you call it an Upgrade?  VERY BAD UX....

Thanks. Would have been much easier and nicer to have basic functionality implemented before release. Very hard to get our users to test when so much is missing. Seems like many applications are in a "half-way" state at Ringcentral. Would be really awesome to finish up some migrations before starting another.

Slash commands, ability to post code snippets, ability to choose order of favorites, teams, groups, direct messages on left: all missing.  It's going to be hard to switch to a new version that has less features.  Hopefully they are coming?  At least the new version does seem much more responsive than the classic version which was desperately needed.

I see that tasks and calendar are highlighted in many conversations. Please add groups and the dashboard back as well. Also, allow users to un-group message types in the left pane - teams, direct messages and groups.

I think most of us are here because we would rather see a complete product released. It also doesn't line up with our training or documentation that we put together within my organization. The Classic version should be offered when the (orange) download for pc button is chosen, it is currently more Robust than the new 20.2.20

It would've been very nice if RC had pointed out that this was not a feature-complete release.  Even better would have been to say "The following features are specifically not included in this release but will be available as follows: ..."

RC offers some great functionality.  At times, though, it seems like you go out of your way to make life difficult for your customers - particularly regarding the RC App.

PS: Not that my opinion matters (especially as a free user), but I'm befuddled why RC would launch a clearly unfinished app - with less functionality than the original.

Don't get me wrong... Glip needed a total overhaul, but this bad boy ain't even half baked!

The download page for the new app: https://support.ringcentral.com/download.html

has this text in the middle of the page: "The previous app, now RingCentral Classic, is still available for download. Not sure which RingCentral app to download? Get expert advice here."

The information on the linked page really does not address which app might be more suited to a users' needs. It would be a million times more useful, supportive and user-friendly to include a bunch of the points being discussed above so that people don't download and have to go through all that discovery on their own.

I'm sorry to say that RC has wasted SO MUCH of my time on tech related stuff that I have -0 patience for this kind of stuff anymore. Please do all your users a solid and provide an article that's thoroughly helpful.

Missing feature.  The ability to organize teams into folders.  CRUCIAL for us as an agency, because we have multiple project teams per client and organize the teams by client.

Color coding is nice to have as well - but the folders are a show stopper for us to migrate to the new app.  Will be staying in Classic.  Not going to do any other beta testing for you at this point.

I notice that the Status doesn't show next to the name anymore in the favorites or direct messages at left of the app.   It doesn't come up in the search either alongside the name.  You have to go into the person to see their status.  This renders the status as reasonably useless.  If they are in a meeting and have set their status as such you have no idea from the left pane or from the search screen,  meaning if you call them from the search screen then its a waste of everyone's time.    please tell me this is something that will be addressed going forward..  Or am i missing something...

I second this.  We need this brought into the Team and Contact views.  Otherwise, the Share Status indicator is not useful.
