RingCentral Meetings – Recording Options

We use RingCentral as VOIP solution across offices in the US and the EU and RingCentral Meetings as primary tool to host internal video conferences.

While video conferencing works reliably in general, RingCentral Meetings lacks configuration options for the recording feature and the default settings sometimes result in videos that are unusable or require editing. 

A typical meeting involves multiple participants (sometimes more than a dozen) joining per video and sharing their screens (e.g., sharing presentations or demonstrating a piece of software). These session are often recorded.

To give an example where the recording required editing: A single participant shared their screen at 1920x1080 and another had their video turned on. The recording resulted in a video with dimension 1920x1920, huge black bars above and below the screen recording, and the single video feed as tiny box in the upper right corner.

It seems that RingCentral Meetings records all audio and video separately during the meeting and composes the final recording afterwards. Providing configuration options (or presets) for this composition would help preventing undesired results (e.g., show a dialog after the meeting ends). Examples of such options could be:

  • Hide video during screen sharing
    (Do not overlay/combine screen recordings with video feeds)
  • Hide all video
    (Do not include any video feeds in the recording, only screen recordings)
  • Scale to screen cast
    (E.g., if one participant shared in 1280x800 and another in 1920x1080, create a 1920x0180 video and scale all other content)
  • Scale to FullHD etc.
