RingCentral Rooms and sharing using HDMI

According to the feature list and getting started/user guide, RingCentral Rooms supports sharing over HDMI. However, in none of the documentation does it describe how to do this or list supported adaptors to permit direct sharing rather than WiFi.

Is it actually possible to share an HDMI input on RC Rooms or is this just a mistake in the docs?

It should be yes.  I have someone looking into the details and we'll update this thread as soon as soon as we can.

Hi Joe,  Let me know if this answers your question.

The answer depends a little bit on how you are joining the meeting, and what device you are using.  If you are just attending as a normal meeting attendee, but you are in a room of other people and want to share your screen, pretty much all newer computers, Mac and PC all have HDMI ports on them so all you would really need is an HDMI cable to display your computer on a TV.

Now, if you are the controller, or another user using an iPad or iPad mini it may be a little more difficult. These devices don't have actual HDMI ports so an adapter would be required.  See this page from Apple for details:  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202044

Mike,

It sounds like you are describing connecting a machine in the room directly to a television in the room. That is what we are currently doing if all attendees are in the room. From the Getting Started guide for RC rooms, it sounds like it's possible for me to share to the RC meeting using an HDMI connection (and possibly a video capture device) rather than using the share.ringcentral.com link.

Our WiFi is sometimes not the best, so the ability to share into the meeting using HDMI or other direct connection would be great. Especially for visitors since it doesn't require installation of the RC meetings application.

Thanks,
joe

Hi Joe, If I'm understanding you correctly, the answer would be no.  However, I may not fully be understanding your needs, If you want, you may wish to give your account manager a call and discuss in this in detail to see if there's a solution.

Joe,

I did a bit of research... Maybe this would help Mike understand your scenario better...

Are you referring to a set up similar to this?

Joe,

I did get confirmation that you can share via HDMI.
the company will need to use a USB Capture device that connects between the Mac and a client (desktop).
If you need more details, let me know.

Mike,

The link Diedre provided has exactly the information that I was looking for. Am I correct in assuming that the current version of RC Rooms will work the same as the version of Zoom Rooms referenced?

Thanks,
joe

We added an HDMI splitter from Cable Matters, just bought off Amazxx.  Works fine, allows someone in the conference room running RC Rooms to plug their laptop into projector and it's their laptop screen that is seen, not the RC Meetings screen.  Personally, that's not what I do.  I join the Room meeting with my laptop and share my screen.  But a director in IT prefers to have his laptop plugged in, so we enabled it.

But this doesn't share the content to other participants in the meeting—which is what I'm hoping to accomplish.

the person plugged into the HDMI that is projecting in the room also then joins the meeting and shares their content.  They prefer doing it this way, because the in-room screen acts a second monitor to their laptop, and they just share that 2nd monitor.

I'm fine doing the same thing with the single monitor of my laptop.  If I need the dual monitor function, then I only share the app that I want to present (powerpoint)

are there specific settings on the Ring Central Config. that need to be enabled for this to work?

No specific config needed for the use case described by Randy. Just plug in the HDMI cable into the laptop sharing the screen and click "Share" in the Meeting app on the laptop. The screen will be shared and viewable by people in the conference room (via the TV) and other users in the meeting that are not on the bridge (via the screen sharing function).

I am attempting this now. When i plug the laptop to the HDMI, Ring Central does not automaticly show the content. Why is this?

Hello Jovan,

We would need more information. I would suggest contacting support so we can see if there's anything we can do.

Hi Everyone, I've been searching all over for this sort of discussion.

I have a question...

I am integrating a set up just as Joe describe so that I can content via HDMI capture device just like Zoom.

If not in a call, will the HDMI Capture device show the connected computer on the displays? Therefore accomplishing a simple "LOCAL PRESENTATION" if local users want to jump in a room and collaborate.

Yes, it would.

However, an easier option though is to use the Direct Share feature on RingCentral Meeting app which uses Proximity Detection feature of the latest version of RingCentral Rooms to share content to the screen.

I just got the magwell and you can share in a meeting via hdmi, but it shows up as a capture device so you flip between it and the room camera....was hoping it was concurrent. Going to try firmware on magwell to see if it will show as as content source instead.

Hi Matt,

We recently ran into a snag with the Magwell cables and RingCentral Rooms. We are working on getting this fixed in our 10.2 release. I do apologize for the inconvenience!

Any update on this. A Magewell USB Capture HDMI Gen 1 works fine.

If you use a Gen 2 device, we get a "Switch Camera" icon on the on the controller. So like Matt said above you cannot screen share as well as show your video to participants. This only happens with a Gen 2 device.

Downfall is i cannot find Gen 1 devices to purchase anywhere.
I have 4 new rooms i need to setup and i would like this to be working

Hey Jeff,

As I mentioned earlier, we are looking to get this fixed in our 10.2 release which will be later on this year (as long as things go smoothly). If I receive a solid ETA I will be sure to update this thread.

Do any of the other hdmi capture devices currently work?  I would like to try the Logitech screen share.  I still have my magwell gen 2 sitting on a shelf awaiting an update...

2 questions:
Can we confirm which adapters will be compatible in the 10.2 update?
Is there a beta test program for customers?

Hi Christopher,

Looks like this is what we are seeing right now in the update:
1. Magewell USB Capture HDMI Gen 2

2. Magewell USB Capture HDMI Plu

When 10.2 is released you will have more information. Regarding if there is a BETA, I don't know. You would have to ask your Account Manager about that.

Is it possible to send a note along asking for support for the Logitech screen share? Their adapter already works in zoom rooms.

Hi Christopher, I believe we are looking at adding some Logitech support but I'm not sure of the details. I would suggest having your Account Manager look into the details once 10.2 rolls out

Is there an engineer working on the product that could chime in? Generally you guys have stayed in feature parity with zoom. Not being able to support wired screen sharing has been a huge blow to our productivity. Wireless screen share is great for a presentation but the moment you have video it crumbles.

Magwell Gen1 USB Capture devices work fine, but good luck finding one.
It took Zoom a few weeks to support the Gen2 device but it works with Zoom. I've just accepted that Ringcentral Rooms is about a year behind any new Zoom features.

Yeah, that’s the problem I have currently.

Zoom released a patch in March that supported gen 1, gen2, and the Logitech screen share devices. Gen2 has been out for a while and as we expand I don’t want to run into an issue where gen3 comes out and we can’t find any more gen2s.

Hey, I got my magwell v2 working, but wanted to test out a Logitech screen share.  Did you get yours working with the latest version of rc rooms?

Christopher Peace

  • 172 Points 100 badge 2x thumb
Yes, the Logitech screen share connects right up and is seen by rooms. The only issue is it is a little laggy, but I haven’t figured out if that’s a system spec issue or an issue with the device itself. After about a minute or so, it starts to show tearing with video.

Hey Christopher,

As far as I know nothing has changed & it's still planned :) Regarding feature notes, I think there are a few small details that don't always get mentioned, like minor bug fixes, this may simply have not made it into the notes.

I heard it is in the September release but its still going through QA during call with our RC team today.  I expect that this will enable the additional devices to show as a capture source instead of a camera source.  Ive been trying to get a beta test for a while but still not releasing yet.

Definitely a miss not having a beta release, even a private one. The handful of community members that want this feature would be great QA resources.

Our pod got the admin update so a bunch of new controls now available for rooms.  One of the controls is to enable/disable automatic switching when hdmi sharing is used.  Unfortunately, still struggling with the magwell gen2 only showing up as a camera source.  I am checking with my rc contacts to see if is coming in a later September release.  Anyone else?

Hey all, after I updated the windows pc app and ipad app and restarted both - the hdmi capture for magwell version 2 works perfectly!.  It works for automatic presenting as well as manually as a content source.  Previously it only showed as a second camera source.

So, not to bring this thread up again, but I'm having issues with the logitech screen share.

When the September update rolled out, I plugged it in and immediately it showed up as "Use HDMI" under Desktop in the sharing menu.

Now, it only shows up under "Camera" in the sharing menu. This makes the user workflow much more annoying, and it also makes it so automatically starting sharing no longer works.

Any ideas?

Can you confirm if you're still encountering this issue? Thanks!
