Save extensions in contact list

I don't understand how a business phone system (one which uses extensions itself) does not have a mechanism for saving extensions of outside contacts on the contact list.

Ideally, depending on the client, there would be two options: 1) to add the extension directly into the contact phone number via a pause (I found a support response that claims that pauses with commas or asterisks are supported, but if you try to save such a number, the number is reformatted and the extension is deleted); This would be ideal for contacts that have auto-attendants where you can always dial the extension

and 2) a seperate "extension" field for contacts where sometimes you have a live receptionist who you tell the person's name to. In that case, you don't want it to autodial the extension, but if it's after-hours or lunch, and there's an auto-attendant, you may need to be able to have the extension handy so you can punch it in.
