It would be great if the desktop app could mute music when making or receiving a call automatically.

When you say "music" are you referring to the music source on your PC? And if so, is it streaming via your browser, playing from an APP, playing from CD?

I typically stream Spotify or use Windows Media Player. I never use CDs .

Yeah that may be tough. Since there are so many different ways that users listen to music, especially over the same IP connection, it would be a programming nightmare for one APP to control the audio of many APPs - especially given every PC is different when it comes to audio/hardware configurations.

And yet almost any set of headphones in the world can pause all of those things with the tap of a button.

Oddly enough with the previous softphone app update I suddenly had this feature. I listen to music on my windows 7 PC using a free app called Music Bee. I installed the update and lo and behold every incoming and outgoing call reduced the volume of the music playing automatically. It was awesome, and I didn't have to set it up, in fact I didn't change a thing with either my RC app settings or my PC settings to accomplish it. Sadly, on the most recent update (7.2.4), the functionality vanished. Easy come, easy go I guess

It would be extremely complicated for one app to try and control the volume of other programs on your computer as we would have no way of knowing what all users would be using. However PC's have a built in control that might work satisfactory which you can access from the control panel.

In the Sound configuration window, click on the Communications tab. This is the location where this automatic reduction feature is configured. As explained by Windows:

Windows can automatically adjust the volume of different sounds when you are using your PC to place or receive telephone calls.

Thank you for the tip. Unfortunately, it does not work with RingCentral. The PC must not recognize the call from RC. I appreciate it though!

Hi, is there a way in Mac? I use another soft phone xlite and when a call comes in or out it automatically silents my music being played thru itunes. Can the same thing be done with RC? any body knows any configuration that will grant this? Thanks in advance.

Hello Allison, that would be a feature request which you can submit through the community page. There are no current settings for the RC softphone to auto-mute the music playing on the computer when a call comes in.

Don't bother with the request. They just ignore them. Skype for Business has this feature built in.

Actually, there is an easier way to send the feature request for the softphone by using the "Feedback" option under settings.
