Add ability to synchronize your contacts with your Googlemail contacts list

Currently you can sync your contacts with Outlook, but more and more of my clients are using Googlemail as their primary office system. It would be great if they didn't have to keep exporting my contacts from Googlemail and into RingCentral. To make that easy, Google has already got CardDAV APIs available to use:https://developers.google.com/google-...

Me too. This appears to be a pretty basic requirement that should be available. Not all people use the softphone and if you use the iphone or ipad app then there is no sync!

Literally just signed up for this service.  Less than 2 hours ago.  One of the first things I did was try to import our 100s and 100s of google contacts.  Couldn't find a way to do it.  Google search led me to this post, where it's been promised for 2 years.  Not a good start...  if I continue to hit speed bumps like this not sure if I'll last through the 30 day trial.

edit: Ironically it allowed me to login with our company gmail to post this comment.

You certainly can import your Google contacts into RingCentral's Personal contacts via a CSV formatted file. You don't state how many users or extensions you are evaluating with. This is important because each user must currently import their own personal contacts.  Contacts cannot be imported into the Company contacts because that is where your own company extensions and users are listed.

First go into your Google contacts and export them as a CSV formatted file. Then after you log into your RingCentral account, make certain  that you are in the "My Extension" portal. Select the "Contacts" menu selection followed by the "Personal" selection. At the bottom of the page click on the "Import" button and follow the instructions.

Remember that each extension needs to import their own personal contacts.

As far as I can tell, this will do nothing to sync your Google Contacts to RingCentral.

However I can't get the Chrome Extension to work properly so I haven't seen this new feature working yet.
I agree, thanks for the add-on but it still does not bring contacts to ringcentral.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Synchronize Google Contacts to RingCentral Apps (Desktop & Mobile).

When I am in the RingCentral Desktop app and the Mobile App, I want to be able to see my Google Contacts data under Contacts > Personal. This way I don’t have to re-key data or import data. It looks like some of RingCentral’s competitors do offer this capability.

The RingCentral Chrome extension is a great addition to the RingCentral offerings. There is an issue with it though not synchronizing all contacts. I've opened a ticket with tech support but have not received a resolution.

Todd,

That's strange. I have had no issues with it synchronizing all my Google contacts. I agree that it is a great addition to the RingCentral offerings.

I'd like to know more about any resolution you might receive.

OK...now I understand. The reason I have never had a problem is that I have always entered my phone numbers in the xxx-xxx-xxxx format.

However, I've found that editing the numbers to xxx-xxx-xxxx is not a guaranteed fix. I'm reluctant to invest the time to edit if RC may be able to make it work for me and others by changing some code.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Google Contacts: Chrome Extension integrate with Gmail Contacts.

I love the Chrome extension and integration with Gmail, except the contacts integration fails more often than not.  When I want to call a contact, I click the Contacts button, then type in a name. The contact usually appears, but when I click it, it says "contact not found."  Am I doing something wrong?

I can't believe that I'm considering quitting RingCentral after several years because they can't figure out how to integrate with Google contacts. Even I can write code to sync a database with Google, and I'm not even a good programmer. This isn't rocket science.

Contacts are a fundamental component of a phone system, and in a cloud-based phone system everyone expects that the contacts could be synced with other cloud-based systems. After all, nobody actually manages their contacts in RingCentral or any other phone system - contacts are managed in a CRM, email, or some other system, but they better be available and up-to-date in the phone system.

It was fine (although annoying) to go through the export/import/rebuild groups process when I worked alone and only had to update my RC contacts once a month. But as the business has grown this has become a frustrating process.

We are adding new contacts into Google every day. Those contacts have to appear in our RingCentral system so I have to export/import every day now. Obviously, I had to give up using groups entirely because these have to be rebuilt manually after every import. In the very near future we are going to need groups working again and that will be the day we quit RC.

Two things are needed immediately:

1) True sync with Google contacts.

2) Add a third type of contact. Besides "Company" which really means "Only RingCentral" and "Personal" we need a way to share "Business" contacts among selected people in our RC system. How are we supposed to manage 20 users who all have to manually update their "Personal" contact list whenever we add a new customer, or a customer changes their cell phone number?

Agree on all counts!

If you see the original date that RC was working on this feature was TWO YEARS AGO!!!!!

I suggest we start bombarding their LinkedIn and FaceBook pages with:

"When are you going to add GOOGLE CONTACT SYNC? It has been over 2 years since you started working on it?"

I'm baffled as to why this hasn't been done yet too. When I was a 1 man shop it was just an irritating nuisance. Now that there are multiple people, and I'm not the one answering the phone, it's a big problem. I need to import all of my team members contacts each day.

A sync between RC and Google contacts is really important!

Is the new feature "Google Contacts" a way to solve the lack of having a Company-wide contact management with RingCentral? I mean, having one Google account shared with the organization, could be the way to solve this old issue (feature request) ?

By the way, I'm looking at my latest version 8.2.1.22660 of RingCentral Desktop and that option is not there...

Part of the problem I have run into is that when you "sync" with multiple apps like Ringcentral and Pipedrive CRM - you get duplicate contacts...  and it take a lot of work to fix...

I have a questions - Will RC actually SYNC the contacts in real time?
or do you still have to export/import the contacts on a daily basis?

Google contacts will obviously not sync with a physical phone and the RingCentral for Windows desktop app will sync with MS Outlook but not Google contacts if I remember correctly (I don't use the desktop app but rather the Chrome extension since it does sync with Google contacts).

You can always import your Google contacts into your personal contacts but I know that wouldn't stay synced. Is that what you were referring too? Your post was a bit ambiguous.

The RingCentral Desktop Google Contacts sync process only syncs with RingCentral for Desktop, not the mobile app or the online account, so what's the point? When I add a new contact to my CRM and/or Google Contacts, I want all of my RingCentral to reflect that new information. This is important for Caller ID purposes on the desk phones, mobile apps and voicemail/missed call email notifications in order to quickly be able to identify who the caller is to prioritize which calls to answer first. The fact that RingCentral does not have a better way to manage contacts is really unacceptable. Having to export and re-import contacts each day or week is really not what I would expect from a cutting edge cloud based phone system company. I have now posted my concerns to this community idea page regarding this, but I'm doubtful that this functionality will be addressed, as it seems to have been an ongoing concern for many users for years now.

I'm using the most current version of RingCentral for Desktop v. 8.45.25218 and mobile app v. 9.0.3.1.16 (44.5.12.12). I just had a screen-share support session with RingCentral today. In conclusion, this solution only syncs Google Contacts with RingCentral for Desktop. It does NOT sync with Personal Contacts in the RingCentral Online Portal or Mobile App. Contacts in the RingCentral Online Portal determine what Contact Names/Caller ID show up on Desk Phones, Mobile App and Voicemail/Missed call Notifications.

My understanding from my conversation with RingCentral Support today was that the only way to sync contacts from RingCentral for Desktop with Personal Contacts in the Online Portal is to click the cloud icon for each contact on a 1 off basis from either the Desktop or Mobile App. There's no way to do all of them at once. Or, you can export all your Google Contacts to a csv file, then import them into the RingCentral Online Portal. The only problem is that you have to continuously export and re-import your contacts constantly in order to have up-to-date information.

So here's the feature request I think everyone here is looking for: The way it should work is that whenever you add a new contact to your Google Contacts, it should add that contact to your RingCentral online portal contacts, which should result in those contacts also showing up on the Desktop App, Mobile App, Desk Phones and all Email Notifications. Right now, the sync is only occurring at the RingCentral for Desktop level, which doesn't address the other 3 areas. Does that make sense?

Additionally...you're probably aware that there's no place in RingCentral where you can add a photo of a contact (at least no where that I am aware of). You can however in Google contacts. Here is my RIngCentral mobile app (latest iPhone edition) with photos of my Google contacts within the application. Note: Most of this screen shot has Google contacts however I don't have photos for all my Google contacts.

Also make certain that you are not filtering out your Android or iPhone contacts.

Pilates V,

I DO get it! I was answering Icemanwolf's post...specifically these sentences:
"In conclusion, this solution only syncs Google Contacts with RingCentral for Desktop. It does NOT sync with Personal Contacts in the RingCentral Online Portal or Mobile App. "

...to which I answered:
"
I don't know why yours isn't syncing but if RingCentral support told you it won't sync with the mobile app (either Android or iOS) whoever you spoke with told you incorrect information."

I DO agree that it doesn't sync with the on-line portal. But that's not what I was answering. I DO agree that RingCentral should provide this functionality but please read and understand my entire post before assuming I don't know what the point is or that I don't know what I am talking about. I'm in agreement regarding the on-line portal syncing issue!

Wonderful. Please keep repeating it, because agreeing that the syncing is working fine is misleading to any developer who reviews this thread and misses the crux of the real issue -- the online portal is what matters most here.

No...I'm sure most of them will read the ENTIRE message, which respectfully you haven't seem to have been doing. What part of these sentences doesn't say that?
"I DO agree that it doesn't sync with the on-line portal. But that's not what I was answering. I DO agree that RingCentral should provide this functionality..."

Please don't blame me or anyone for answering a question, or part of one, to straighten out a misguided or misunderstood point.

Icemanwolf,

I apologize if I misunderstood your solution comment. I answered your comment based on exactly what you wrote regarding Google contacts and the RC Mobile app, but as I'm sure you know, sometimes the written word can be understood differently based on context. As I stated in other posts, I agree wholeheartedly that it would be great functionality for RingCentral to allow synchronization between the on-line portal contacts and all locations (IP phones, mobile apps, desktop apps, etc.) that need and use contacts.

OR -- at least allow the API to grant any developers trying to perform an integration, access to the contact directory. Based on my understanding of the API and what I read somewhere (I am not a developer myself), RingCentral API prohibits access to the contact directory...

So... If RingCentral wants to remain married to the Google Contacts synchronization, the above feature request by the other user would be the only user-friendly solution to make it possible.

Even BETTER would be RingCentral making a ZAP on Zapier.com for this, because then it would integrate with hundreds of other apps with ease... There are RingCentral ZAPs for plenty of other things like pushing SMS messages and so forth, but nothing for synchronizing contact first name, last name, and phone number. This "feature" is more like an "essential capability" that has been long-ignored.

Please fix it.

At the very least, I wish there was a Zapier trigger for Ringcentral so when a new contact is added, I can send it to Google Contacts.

Right now, contacts get silo'd in Ringcentral, and the only way to export them is a .csv!
