earlier versions of desktop app have a drop down field that allows you to switch caller ID for text messages (SMS).  in verison 8.0.4 it is gone and test support said it has been removed.  THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDED IN.  Why was this removed?

My understanding is that only the "operator extension" still has this feature.  I tested with mine and I can SMS with my DID and the main number.

Chris,

You can also change the Caller ID in the settings, under the Caller ID tab.

Correct Danno,  The operator extension has this.   I also rolled back to 7.5 and that version also only allowed the operator to do this.

Update to my original post.  Turns out, it was and is still working for the operator, that was my mistake.  However, we need this to work for non operators.  since it works for the operator, the code is there to make it work for all users.  Can we get it turned on for non operators?

I'll edit the main title of this thread to indicate this and we'll leave this an active Idea topic so others can vote.

Mike, can you change the title to read "SMS: Allow all users (not just operator ext) to text messages (SMS) from any Number".  We need to be able to text from any of the auto reception numbers available since our call center represents multiple locations and the realtors want to see the text coming from the franchises location.

Yeah, this title is better than the current one. We have multiple company numbers and we should be able to allow any user to send SMS out from any of them as needed, not just the main number.

For this option to work optimally, I would suggest that the number used to send out the SMS would have the option to be masked with the main business number, on that way if the customer was to reply to the SMS the SMS would reach back to however sent it, and not to the main number.

Really need this feature. The way ring central is setup to only allow one phone per user, we have multiple users that could be considered the operator based on the day and time. To make this congruent with your offering, there really should be the ability to text from the company number from any user. If you want to make it so it can be more limited, just have it be an option on the menu for which numbers are allowed for certain users. But to only allow one user access to the companies main number is just ridiculous, think if this is how phone calls were handled? I appreciate ring central generally being ahead of the curve just by having the ability to text, but the way I see it, maybe 5 years down the road, texting a business will possibly replacing calling. Would it make sense then to only allow a single user? Absolutely not. Just like it is absurd to only have one user be able to take calls from the company number.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Send SMS using main number.

I wanted to send SMS using my main number and not to logout and login to an extension with a direct local number just to send SMS.

Note: This conversation was created from a reply on: Integrate: SMS messages.

Instead of adding new cool features Ring Central is removing? Does not make sense...???!!! Please ADD this feature ASAP.  Just curious what is their logic behind this change? Thank you for listening to our problem.

SMS allowance for all users should be voted on and passed. SMS text allows instant communication between users and clients. statistically, a potential client or other will read a text in lieu of an email.

Yes we have been having a great response from our clients about being able to text them but now managing those texts is a bit of an issue. Everyone has to be logged into the same extension which is pretty counterintuitive for most of ring centrals features

If you could just add an additional tab for the app for messages from the main number that would pretty easily solve this issue

This is REALLY needed in my business too. It is such a pain to have to log in each employee again and again. If it wasn't for the other great features, I would think of looking into other offers that accommodate this.

I completely agree. This is like only allowing 1 person to answer voice calls to the main number which is not how it works for even businesses that just have a few employees.

We are using a single login for the text messages that has to be shared across multiple users so it really hinders the capabilities ring central has, but sms has become so essential for us

Admins should be able to allow/disallow any user to text/call from ANY company number, not just the main number.

would be good if it came unprogrammed for every user but then an admin could give permissions to whoever they like to give ability to use main number to text. just to think this through a little more, hopefully it wasnt mentioned already, if everyone can text out through the main number, if someone responds to it where would it go? how would the responding text know which user to go back to if it was sent from a main number and not a direct number?

the softphone should list out all potential text numbers, and let whoever has access to text to/from that particular company number see all conversations in and out on that line. like Jon Carissimo mentioned in another comment with the multiple inboxes etc.

I think the easiest solution would be to use a drop down in the app. Just like the drop down on the dialer to select the number for the caller id. That way there would basically be multiple text message inboxes that are completely separate. An admin could allow a user to use the main number and then they can switch back and forth between the company text message inbox and their personal inbox. We've been really itching for this feature since basically everyone in our company needs access to the main number text messages. We have been using an extra extension that everyone logs into but that severely limits the capabilities of ring central when all the users are logged in with the same extension. I hope this feature is on the radar for the developers because it would be a game changer!

Please add this function back. Clearly programmers ARE NOT the daily users like us. Even a cheap telephony program would allow user to do this.

Yes please it's hurting us as well we are being sent a lot of text to our main which points to a department (queue) and I have to keep one ringcentral app logged into that extension to monitor and respond to all which puts a strain on me when I need my entire team to be able to help with sms to the main #.  We should be able to specify who get's the inbound text and who can reply to those text sent to our main.

Please add this as it is a critical need for our business and most businesses. With the advancement of technology send text messages more than talking on the phone these days. VERY IMPORTANT Feature.
