Increase visibility of desktop app notifications

I would like the option to increase the visibility of the desktop app notifications. This happens a lot for our users ... they receive a text but they were busy or away from their computer briefly. The desktop app is in the background, so they didn't notice they had received a message. Or perhaps the sound was turned down. Support gave me the option to receive an email with the texts, but I don't want them to have to deal with the text, then still have the email to delete also. I would like to have a red number on the icon in the system tray that indicates the number of missed messages (similar to the icon on outlook for emails received). This way, if a user missed the brief pop up because they were busy or away, they'd see that icon and know there are messages waiting.
For Macs, I'd like the icon to continue to bounce, notifying user they have unread messages.

What visibility?  Please make the desktop notification SMS / TEXT / INSTANT MESSAGE?  demand attention.  Bring the app and the message to the front and center of the screen and flash like crazy until it is answered.  Also, flash in the system tray and combine with Windows message notifications. (With the option to turn the flashing notifications off, of course)

We tried using it a couple of times and went back to Trilian, because there is no real flashing alert that demands attention.  Just a red spot on the envelope that you have to keep checking to see if you have a text.  People expect instant response, thats why it is called "Instant Message"  .  So maybe its not designed to be a Instant Message app, just a glorified sms texter.   The SMS messages or email notices are annoying to delete and cannot be replied to by SMS.  You have to load up Rcentral in your phone or mosey on over your PC to reply.

If you are sitting at your desk, its a pain to have to go to the web portal to turn off SMS or EMAIL notification for all of your instant messages "er.. humm... texts"   Our staff just tried it again after six months and nothing has changed.  We are ditching it again and going back to trillian so we can communicate desktop to desktop without annoyance and better alert of new messages.

Rickkee,

While I agree that the desktop app does not bring crazy attention to an incoming SMS, not all businesses want or need that. Here possibly there could be a request for the ability to turn ON/OFF such functionality.

However, I'm afraid you are misinformed about other items you mention in your post. You state, "People expect instant response, thats why it is called "Instant Message"  .  So maybe its not designed to be a Instant Message app, just a glorified sms texter." - You are incorrect that it is an Instant Message application. It is not. It is business SMS functionality built into RingCentral. When I send or receive texts, neither I or the person I am texting expect an "Instant" response. There are other help desk instant message applications specifically built for that type of servicing.

You state, "The SMS messages or email notices are annoying to delete and cannot be replied to by SMS.  You have to load up Rcentral in your phone or mosey on over your PC to reply." - That unfortunately is also untrue. To delete any SMS simply click on the pencil icon (Edit) in the upper right of the screen. You will see small circles to the left of each SMS message. Click on the ones you want to delete or of you want to delete the entire string, simply select the "Select All" button at the bottom. (see screen shot below). You can also start an SMS text message from the desktop app or continue an SMS text conversation as well in the desktop app.

You state, "If you are sitting at your desk, its a pain to have to go to the web portal to turn off SMS or EMAIL notification for all of your instant messages "er.. humm... texts" ". - While it is true that you can only turn off notifications in the web portal, it would seem to me that a person would either want it turned on or turned off. I can't see where this would happen several times a day or even several times a week. The only times I could see this happening is if a person wants notification when they are on call, or during times of vacations or holidays when they do not want ANY work related information coming to them.

Did you receive onboarding when you first signed on with RingCentral? Were these questions that you had when you first started or have these come up since? Is this the first time you have looked for support with regard to these issues?

I am not a RIngCentral employee but I and others like me, as well as RingCentral employees monitor these forums and can help you with information such as I provided above. Other functionality ideas and requests are seen here by RIngCentral developers.

If you still have issues, I urge you to contact your sales rep and/or support and bring these issues to the table.

Rickkee,

I forgot to include a screen shot of where you would type a text message ion the desktop app. See the screen shot below using the same real conversation on MY desktop.

Hi,

I too would like the ability to have more control over notifications in the desktop app. We are trying to consolidate internal/external communications tools and it just seems a no brainer to utilize RingCentral to it's fullest. If we could have the option to persist the attention grabbing flashing of the icon on the task bar until the missed event is acknowledged, it would be more beneficial to our users. This would also allow us to more easily get buy in to switching to the desktop application.

Thanks,
GAR
