I’m struggling with creating a custom rule for a user on our account, and wondering if I’ve misunderstood how it works.

The user’s extension was originally set up to play a non-voicemail announcement for all calls. The intention was to try and keep this user’s extension open for internal employees while not allowing inbound calls from outside to ring their phone or leave a message.

To that end, I tried creating a custom rule on his extension that would allow callers within our company account to bypass this call routing and leave a voicemail message - adding each of our company users manually to the Callers field. Still, regardless of who calls him, all users still get the announcement without voicemail.

I’ve also tried this on my own extension with similar results, so I am curious if there’s a piece I’m missing.

hi,

REASON WHY IT’S NOT WORKING FOR YOU
When you are adding all of your users to the callers field you are selecting their direct number.
Instead you should be selecting their extension number

HOW TO FIX IT
probably start from scratch. Create a new rule and set the following condition:
Callers > number
See 3 pics attached below - I haven’t done extensive testing on this but am 99% confident it works!

Thanks @Problem Solver - this is good info!

Oddly though, everything looks the same for me except there’s no toggle to turn auto-format number on or off when I add from the Number tab. Entering the extension just searches our company contacts and adds them with the full direct dial number including country code.

I see what you’re saying - even if I enter the extension in that field at the bottom, I’m still not seeing an “auto-format number” toggle, so the extension gets entered with the default +1 country code. I presume this won’t work.

I’m guessing the lack of that auto-format toggle may be user role based?

You can try reaching out to RC to check why you are missing that toggle.

Also an alternative solution occurred to me - haven’t tested it but looks very plausible:
Do what you were trying originally, but then for every one of your users set it so that they display their direct number for internal calls - pic below shows where to find that setting. Can also be done in bulk with a template.
