poor fax quality

I’m on a Mac using the desktop application from RingCentral. I’m using the scan to fax feature using a brother multifunction scanner. The function to scan and fax works well however the recipients receive an extremely poor quality image. My suspicion is that the resolution is low, and this option cannot be altered in any of the settings on the RingCentral app.
