We recently migrated to RingEx from the cloud phone platform formerly known as Shoretel Sky and we have made the unwelcome discovery that the firmware that RingCentral upgrades us to shows us random pictures of architecture. For us, this is a big problem because we are architects and the work isn’t ours. It’s a bit like if you went into Nintendo’s offices and the phones were cycling between pictures of Crash Bandicoot, Sonic and Master Chief.

I’ve looked in the firmware and tried to find discussions online for how to change what is displayed in the screensaver and I haven’t yet turned up anything useful. I also emailed our rep, but he’s just emailed other people. There has to be a way, so any help finding that way would be appreciated.

I get it, Chris!
Let me check in with some folks to see what I can learn about options for adjustment.

So I have done some digging and apparently the 485G firmware is a variant of the Mitel 6900 firmware and I was able to turn up some documentation on that here:

https://edocs.mitelcommunicationservice.com/appsuitelatest/6900_Screensaver.html

It all centers around a Configuration File and a Configuration Server, none of which exist in any direct way with the implementation I’ve been given.

From similar queries in the past that I found someone had the idea that they should be able to upload files directory to the phones and replace the existing files there, but I haven’t seen anyone say they did it successfully and I’m not sure if the options to do that exist in the current firmware version.

But at least it should be theoretically possible from what I’ve found, but it could be potentially a very annoying process. I’m surprised at the total lack of branding ability in the platform. The ShoreTel Sky platform had the ability to have logos (via the background picture) on the phones pushed out centrally and I was expecting our ‘upgrade’ to have more capabilities not less. Not even less, but for the moment our office is showing off our competitors work!

Not a good look!🤦
I’m digging in with some higher level support to see if they have a solution or workaround.

@Chris Donnell Okay, it is possible to set a custom screensaver on the Mitel 485G phones, and we have the details you need to get started.

Next Steps

The process requires a custom configuration file that our team will push to your phones. Before we can do that, you'll need to submit a support case. In your case, please specify that you're requesting a custom configuration to set a custom screensaver on your Mitel 485G phones.

Here's what you'll need to do on your end:

  • Host the Image: You'll need to host the image yourself and provide us with a URL. We cannot provide or host the image for you.

  • Image Resolution: The supported resolution is 470x272. Please ensure your image is this size before hosting it.

Once you have your hosted image ready, please include the URL in your support case. This will allow our team to create and push the custom configuration file to your phones.

We're ready to help you with the next steps once you've submitted the case. Please let us know if you have any other questions and if you don’t get what you need, circle back here and I’ll personally escalate with my colleagues that recommended this process.
