The boss wants his calls forwarded to his admin but we need a way to keep other communications like, SMS messages, to go just to him. Any suggestions for separating the text function from the call forwarding?

Hi Bonnie, setting up the call forwarding of an extension will not affect the SMS functionality. Here's a KB article for Call Forwarding to another Extension. https://support.ringcentral.com/article/Forwarding-calls-another-RingCentral-extension.html
If you setup call forwarding from RC online admin portal , only your call will be forwarded and there is no way other service like sms text will be affected.
