We just switched to RingCentral and are trying to utilize the intercom system with the Yealink T48s and Expansion docks. We have gotten the intercom to work by pressing Intercom on the Yealink T48 then entering the Extension Number we wish to use. However when we add someone to the expansion hotkey and setting it up with Intercom to a specific user it just rings the user.

How do we get this to work on the Yealink T48s with Expansions?

@Pete Wells I'm currently checking the answer for your question. I'll get back to you soon.

@Mary-Community_Moderator, I was working on another issue and came across this three-year-old post with no further details.

Hello @Petew, thanks for bringing this old thread to my attention! My apologies that we didn't follow up on your original query (if this is also you). Three years is a long time, and I appreciate your patience.

I checked our current knowledge base and resources regarding the Yealink T48s and expansion module intercom hotkey functionality on RingCentral. A lot has changed, and there are new settings or workarounds available now.

Here's the solution:

Configure the Expansion Module Hotkey (via Phone's Web GUI):

  1. Access Web GUI: Get your phone's IP address (press OK button on the phone) and enter it into a web browser. Log in (default admin/admin or your specific RingCentral-provisioned credentials).

  2. Navigate: Go to the DSSKey or Programmable Keys section.

  3. Set the Hotkey:

    • Type: Select Intercom.

    • Value: Enter the RingCentral Intercom Feature Access Code *50 followed immediately by the target extension number.

      • Example: For extension 101, the value would be *50101.

    • Label: Give it a clear name (example: "Intercom Bob").

  4. Save & Apply: Click Confirm/Save and allow the phone to reboot if prompted.

Why this works: While you set the "Type" to Intercom, the "Value" needs to tell RingCentral how to perform the intercom. The *50 code signals to the system that this is an intercom call requiring auto-answer, rather than a standard dial to the extension.

Important Notes:

  • Recipient's Settings: Ensure the recipient's RingCentral extension is configured to allow auto-answer for intercom calls (usually enabled by default).

  • Firmware: Keep your phone and expansion module firmware up-to-date with RingCentral-certified versions.

  • Provisioning: If your phones are auto-provisioned by RingCentral, manual changes might be overwritten. For a permanent solution across multiple devices, discuss implementing this via a custom template with RingCentral support.

This setup should allow your expansion hotkey to trigger a true intercom call with auto-answer functionality. Let me know if you give it a try!
