Cisco ATA 192 Troubles

Recently RC has stopped offering the normal Polycom ATA devices we use for fax machines. I was told the Cisco ATA 192 would offer the same functionality.

On multiple devices we have discovered that the internet out port on the device (labelled as "Ethernet" on the device) does not seem to function. I have spent the last week plus poking around in the online configuration utility and I cannot get this to work. I can get the device online, I can fax in and out, everything works other than the port on the device that is supposed to be used for another device to access the web will not allow a connection. I believe this has something to do with the IP address on the port being assigned to a weird value.

I am still waiting on a solution from RC Support. This has stopped all fax conversions currently so hoping that either 1) there is a solution already from someone on this board or 2) help others who are stuck with this issue.

Hi Andy,

Thank you for bringing this to our community. I have thoroughly reviewed your case with our Tier 2 team and I am sorry for the delay in resolving this issue. I will personally reach out to them and request an update on progress.

We were also given the CiscoATA 192 for fax. At one location I had to manually update the firmware on it just to get it to work. The Ethernet port doesn't work either. I am guessing this has to do with the ATA trying to do DHCP its self. It should be acting as a passthrough and it isn't and once the ATA provisons to ringcentral I can't log into the ATA anymore to play with the DHCP.

Did ever have any luck? I am on hour #3 with my fourth support tech and they are still trying to get the pass through port to work.

Was there ever a solution to this?  I’m experiencing this issue now, and the first-level support team does not comprehend it when I explain it.  The Ethernet port works, you auto-provision the ATA via the portal, and the Internet via the Ethernet port stops working.

In order to re-enable the port, you will need to log into the device via its IP + admin password after it has successfully registered to RingCentral and do the following:

  1. Network Setup → Basic Setup → Networking Service dropdown
  2. It will say “NAT”
  3. Change it to “Bridge”
  4. Submit/save

The device will reboot, and potentially grab a new IP depending on how your network is configured. But after that, you’ll have access to both ports as LAN ports.

I bought a Cisco 192 ATA with the EX license for our dedicated fax machine. After having spent at least one week and numerous hours with RC support, it still does not work.  Can someone help.

Thanks

Sorry to hear you're having trouble with your Cisco 192 ATA setup. Since you've already worked with support, we recommend escalating the case for further investigation. Please send me a private message with your account details and case number, and we’ll coordinate with our support team to assist you further.

Let us know how we can help!

Well, it looks like the Cisco ATA192 Ethernet port issues continue, several years after this thread was started.

We bought the 192 instead of the 191, specifically because it offers the second network port, which we can't get working.  We can't even log into the IP that the ATA grabbed from our DHCP server.

The Internet port works fine, and the TEL1 port rings our FAX machine just fine, but when we try to connect the network (bridged or switched) port to our printer (it is part of the print/copy/fax machine), NO LUCK.

Running a second Ethernet cable from a network switch to the printer works fine.

Based on previous posts, I'll have to log into the ATA192's Web server to configure it, but it doesn't respond to a browser, or even ping.

I see it plain as day on my router's list of connected devices, along with the IP it's using.

We have used the second port on dozens of Polycom VVX phones on a different provider's platform to provide connectivity for employee's computers, and never had a single problem.  Those phones just work, right out of the box.

Frustrating !

We have a situation where a client has 3 offices. In one office (Ofc B), the problem site, the ATA122 that had worked for years, suddenly stopped working, Once in a while could send a fax but 99% time no.  Took the ATA122 to two of the clients other offices with identical firewalls and they both worked Perfectly. Bought a new ATA192 from Ring Central, Connected to Ofc B  It gets a red error light every time on the one office but when testing it on the other two offices it works perfectly.  Took an ATA192 that has worked perfectly on one of their offices (Call it Ofc A) for 6 months, Swapped it with the new one that did not work in the problem office (Ofc B).  The new ATA192 that failed in Ofc B works  perfectly in office A BUT the ATA192, that worked perfectly in Ofc A, when connected to Ofc B the moved iit did not work.  I have tested all of the ATA’s in my office with no firewall and they all work perfectly.  The IT company says it is a riing central issue, that Firewalls can not effect the performance of an ATA.  Thoughts?  Suggestions?

Your IT team may need to run a quick, temporary bypass test to isolate the local network environment, as well as look into the firewall settings for Office B. Since the ATAs work perfectly in your other offices and on an open network, running a quick test (such as connecting the ATA directly to the ISP modem or a cellular hotspot) will help us confirm if the local firewall or SIP ALG settings are accidentally blocking the traffic.

  • The Hotspot Test: Try plugging the Office B ATA directly into a cellular hotspot or a cradlepoint router. If the ATA immediately gets a green light and faxes perfectly over a cellular connection, it confirms that the RingCentral service is active and the issue lies within the office's wired network or firewall restrictions.

  • The Direct-to-Modem Test: Temporarily bypass the internal firewall altogether by plugging the ATA directly into the ISP modem (you may just need to power-cycle the modem so it assigns a public IP to the ATA). If it works flawlessly here, it provides clear, objective data that the local firewall settings are inadvertently blocking the traffic.
