How are URLs in SMS messages counted as "segments"?

My team send SMS messages that include our company URL. I am trying to reduce the number of characters in our messages to better comply with the character limits of “segments” but I cannot find information on how URLs are counted as segments.

This is new to me too, but what I’m finding is that a URL is like any other characters that you include in a message.
