Ringcentral retired the desktop phone app, and now when I go to make calls a error message that reads “

RingCentral Phone Not Installed - You weren't able to make calls because RingCentral Phone is not installed. Install RingCentral Phone first.” pops up and suggest that I download the RC desktop app that no longer exists. I deleted all files related to Ringcentral on the desktop…

This error happens because your computer’s operating system is still trying to route phone links (like tel: protocols) to the legacy, retired app instead of the new one. Even though you deleted the files, the old system pathways are still active.

Here is how to completely fix it:

1. Install the Current App

RingCentral Phone has been replaced by the unified RingEX (RingCentral App). If you haven't already, download and install the current desktop app from the official RingCentral Downloads Page.

2. Update Your Default App Settings

You need to tell your computer to route calls to the new software:

  • Windows: Go to Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Choose defaults by link type. Look for the TEL protocol and change the default app to the new RingCentral app.

  • Mac: Open the native FaceTime app, go to Settings (or Preferences), look for Default for calls:, and change it to RingCentral.

3. Check the App's Internal Setting

  1. Open the new RingCentral desktop app.

  2. Go to Settings (gear icon) > Phone.

  3. Under the General section, locate Default phone app for calling and ensure it is set to Use RingCentral (this app).

4. Clear Browser Cache (If clicking web links)

If this happens when clicking numbers inside a web browser or CRM, clear your browser's cache and cookies. This wipes out old, cached instructions trying to launch the non-existent legacy software.
